Amps: Brand Loyal or PLay the FIeld

When purchasing a new amp are you loyal to a certain brand(s) or are you willing to play the field.

I've gone through dozens of amps which gave me a better insight what works for me, my style and any bands I play in.

Marshall has always been a brand that worked for me and meshed well with my style/genre.

Mesa's are great amps but didn't really suit my band's overall tone.

Peavey 5150/6505 was cool to play but would never work for me.

Fryette's rock. A different tone/feel but somehow works incorporation with my style.

How about you? You're next amp (main workhorse/gigging amp that is) what company will it be and why?

This can also lead into a discussion about tubes. I'm not a fan of 6L6s. Like El34s, but love KT88s.

Re: Amps: Brand Loyal or PLay the FIeld

I've never played a Marshall that left me satisfied... (never played a good ole JTM45 though)

I tend to lean Fender in most cases.

Re: Amps: Brand Loyal or PLay the FIeld

I am not necessarily loyal to one brand. I have had Fenders, Marshalls, Mesas, Gibsons, and Ampegs. But my favorites are Ampegs...for guitar and bass. I won't touch the new ones, though. When SLM was bought, Ampegs went to hell very quickly.

Not very loyal.

I have gigged 3 Fenders, a VOX, and a Blackheart.

I want to buy another VOX, but not because it's a VOX - because I like the amp and its features, objectively.

Re: Amps: Brand Loyal or PLay the FIeld

Not very loyal to anyone either. I have a Sovtek, and the rest I built, except for the little Vox I am trying to sell.

Re: Amps: Brand Loyal or PLay the FIeld

Nearly every amp I've owned has been a Marshall. Three in the stable currently and there are at least two others I'm tempted by.

Re: Amps: Brand Loyal or PLay the FIeld

It depends on the project I am working in. Currently I am using a Deluxe Reverb and so far it appears to be working fine. I am also using my new Classic Overdrive with it which has been awesome.

My favorite amps that I own are my Bogner Shiva & my Komet. Nothing is better then the Komet but it is very loud & in most rooms its just too much amp.

I have tried a few amps, and while I wouldn't call it loyalty, Fender just has what I like.

Re: Amps: Brand Loyal or PLay the FIeld

I'll play whatever I think will work for me and I get a good deal on.

Re: Amps: Brand Loyal or PLay the FIeld

I have always gravitated towards EL34/6CA7 amps, mostly Marshall-inspired amps (I've only ever owned one Marshall).

Re: Amps: Brand Loyal or PLay the FIeld

I could care less what brand it is, I only care what it sounds like...

Re: Amps: Brand Loyal or PLay the FIeld

I'm not loyal to a brand per se, but most of the amps I like tend to be Mesas. That has more to do with the fact that they suit my style, not because I'm attached to the brand.

Re: Amps: Brand Loyal or PLay the FIeld

I don't buy and sell enough amps to develop a brand loyalty. That being said, I am a die-hard Fryette fan.

Re: Amps: Brand Loyal or PLay the FIeld

I am more loyal to a sound which is a VOX like clean preferably in a 15 watt or 30 watt package. That said because of this I am partial to VOX

Re: Amps: Brand Loyal or PLay the FIeld

My first bet would be a Marshall, next up is a Vox. Anything else I'm iffy. My secondary choices would be Krank or a Blu VooDoo. But I've never heard a fender deville or a Dr. Z or a Matchless, a Hiwatt, a Plexi clone, or any of those other amps. I'd be hesistant to try a Bogner or a Mesa.
I'm fairly easily pleased.

Re: Amps: Brand Loyal or PLay the FIeld

Despite the fact that Marshalls dominate my amps set, I would not say that I'm loyal to the brand. In the last decade they released stuff that I don't like that much.

I'm rather loyal to a British voiced, 50W EL34-loaded high gain amp construction. Amps like JCM800 MK2 lead 50W, JCM900 2500, Laney AOR, Laney GH50L, Selmer Treble'n'Bass, Laney Klipp and the like. Even the power amp of my custom Hackman VH2S has dual 50W EL34 monoblocks.

Some weeks ago, because of spine problems, I've switched to an AMT M1 pre / EHX 44Magnum PA live setup because of their friendly wheight. They work and I have a Marshall that is one half Syberian, one half New Yorker, never touched Britain but more British sounding than most stuff coming from there now'days :)

New amp? Probably, it will be an AMT E1 or R1 pre with my studio in the mind.

i guess i tend to play the field right now I'm loving the Egnater Tweaker because it truly has a remarkable range of authentic tones. I'm really looking forward to trying different tube types and speakers in this one. Maybe a Swamp Thang and a Red Fang or a Texas Heat and Private Jack.

for current production amps:
Blackstar, Orange, Egnater, Carvin, Randall MTS, Matchless

for vintage amps:
Fender, Vox, Marshall, Hiwatt
