Amps I should look at??

Re: Amps I should look at??

+100 on the Fender Super-sonic! The clean tone is the sex!!! The dirty channel is pretty freaking awesome too!! I want one so so bad, but sadly my mom doesn't like me as much as yours likes you.

Re: Amps I should look at??

I'm thinking more and more that if I go Fender, I'd better go for a DRRI and keep my night train for hard rock. I could a/b/y the two instead of having a channel switcher.
If I wanted to gig with a DRRI I could surely get an 8hm 2x12 with some efficient speakers and disconnect the combo speaker?

I'll have to play one. it sounds like it could be cool, and I'm sure the cleans would be better than on a Marshall. I mean, c'mon. It's fender.

Re: Amps I should look at??

I think I follow you. Oh man this is rough because i really love the vox, fender, and marshall tones... right now I got the vox and it gets into marshall-esque territory, but it's a lil like a teaser.

lately I've also preferred heads to combos because of microphonics and tube rattle, something I've had problems with in both of the tube combo amps I've owned in the past.
Combos are SO much easier to haul around. My car is a 4 door Focus and my Mom's car is a Jetta, so both my means of transportation aren't really suited for 4x12s, thats for damn sure!

Keep in mind for the longest times, i used my head along with either a 112 or 212 ext cab. Lil lighter to carry around. By the way I hate 412s

Re: Amps I should look at??

The newer marshalls dsl and jvm actually have a really warm sounding clean. You ever check out a Cravin Legacy?!?!?! The most under rated amp out there. The clean will revival any Fender out there and the distortion is insane. It can cover classic to alt to hard to metal to 80s. It's an awesome amp. Not to mention they sell brand new for $800 for a 100 watt head that has a switch to take it down to 50 watts! El34s.

Re: Amps I should look at??

Ok, so lemme think about this list for a sec:
Combos:
DRRI
Alchemist
Haze

Heads:
Super-Sonic
DSL100
JVM205H
Carvin Legacy?

Re: Amps I should look at??

I would check out both the head and 212 combo. The head is $800 and the combo is $1100. Both are new w/ warranty. I just personally like the Legacy b/c it comes stacked with quality parts... Groove Tubes, Vintage 30s, good reverb unit, etc.

Re: Amps I should look at??

interesting. the price is right, that's for sure. I'll have to go look up some clips and see if I can kinda get a feel for the basic character of the amp
edit: wow they have some really modern sounding gain to me ears. It's not like a mesa or like a peavey but it seems to be able to keep up with what one would throw at it,

I'll try to see if I have any recordings I could send to, plus record some new ones.

Re: Amps I should look at??

ZOGM I just noticed NO master volume? Sounds like it'd be a lovely amp but I can't do w/o a master vol.
I mean the DRRI doesn't have one either but I already have an attenuator that'll handle 25W, but not 50 or 100 LOL

Re: Amps I should look at??

OK so the carvin's basically off the list...

OK I really need to make a decision based on wether I wanna go for a fender sound or a marshall sound... that's gonna determine the whole thing. I'm gonna go bang on my night train.

Re: Amps I should look at??

If I was to invest in a new factory made gigging amp, the SS would be at the top the list.

I suppose i don't need a gigging amp, per se. I just love to jam. i'd love to gig some time but I'd need to go find some dudes and do the whole form-a-band thing. Not a ton of time for that now, but there could be later.

it turns out that I may not be able to move into the place I thought I was gonna move into when I go to SLC in august. Turns out I may have to get into an apartment. If I did get a high-power amp I could grab an attenuator for home, and go kick it at my mom's house in afternoons and jam over there with the thing cranked. She has a haze 40, and lives near a drummer, so I know the neighbors don't care there.

Re: Amps I should look at??

So lemee get down to what my fav guitarist uses and we'll see if I can get the bargain version of using any of what I suggest, and we'll see if my line of thinking makes any sense.
Dude uses a stock CIJ mustang or a strat, an orange OD120 and a JCM 900, and mostly a blues driver and a big muff. stock Blues Driver for a clean sound with light breakup, then a Sobbat "A/B breaker" dual FX loop switcher to switch to the fuzz.
Now i don't wanna just copy this guy's shiiz, but I'd love to have that kinda thing in my repertoire and be able to play my music thru that kinda gear.
So I got a basswood strat.
I can get a BD-2 if I really wanted but I have a danelectro cool cat drive that I think does a nice sparkly breakup when used as a boost
I'll go get a fuzz later
but the amp?

Now I can't afford an Orange 120W vintage 4xEL34 amp. But since he doesn't seem to crank the amp hard when using the blues driver I'm thinking it's not a problem if i can't cop signature Orange overdrive. The JCM 900, he uses that for harder, fuzzier gain tones, not exactly what i want but whatever. Could a DSL100 fit the bill for me? I just wanna get close.

The night train I have does some of this sound I'm looking for but the problem is that the vox's definition lies in the "bright" channel, and it has a lot of natural brightness and not a ton of headroom. Things can get "edgy" in the bright mode when i boost it. The thick mode has a deeper sound but very little headrrom, and it's well, too thick to cop what I want.
So what do I want? A night train with more gain? The Marshall haze doesn't have a sh*tload of headroom on the normal channel (breakup at about 1/3 volume on the normal channel) and it'll probably never do JCM 900 gain with any authority should I ask it to do that. Maybe the DSL is a good idea?

Re: Amps I should look at??

You really, really, really, really need to get out to a store.

When I was amp shopping 3 months ago, I had all these ideas about what amps sounded like from YouTube videos and forum remarks. Then I went to a store and played some of them.

Completely different.

Key points here are that you can't determine the amount of low end an amp has from a YouTube video, because they're are all mic'd, and usually poorly. You need to get in the room with an amp to judge it's low end, period.

Since that is a pivotal focus of your search, the best advice I can give you is to ignore all this advice. Just go play amps for 2 weeks straight, every free hour you have, hit a store.

I went into my amp search looking at all makes and models, all tube complements and speaker configs. I was no-**** ready to spend $1000 - I had it on hand. I was really surprised by what I liked and didn't like. Like, really surprised.

Go play.

Re: Amps I should look at??

Maybe something in Orange's lineup... You might be able to find a used Rocker 30 or Rockerverb 50 head for around $1000. You won't find a new (warranty) one for the price you're looking for, but I've had both and never had a problem.

Re: Amps I should look at??

sorry dude, but the last thing I would write in a forum is... my mom wants to buy me an amp.

THere's nothin' wrong with it!

Try this: I want to buy you an amp!

Sound better? It's no different.

Leave FuseG4 alone!
