Amps Petrucci used on Scenes from A Memory

Re: Amps Petrucci used on Scenes from A Memory

Been Mesa for sure, but the models??? I'm thinking it was Mark II' and IV's during that period.

In an interview taken during that period, I recall him saying that his main amps were MESA/Boogie Mk. IIC+ models.

Thanks. N00b question: Are there any other mesas that sound similar but arent so expensive?

saw him Last Sunday night on the G3 tour and he had two black MkIV's in his rack. You might look into those.

I thought they were black IIC+'s but I was mistaken. Nevertheless the sound he was getting out of them was veeeeeeery similar to his IIC+ rig. I liked it much better than the Road Kings he'd been using for Octavarium and Train of Thought.

How was G3 btw?

John used Mark 4's on that album. The SFAM album was the time he switched guitars and amps.

Re: Amps Petrucci used on Scenes from A Memory

Am I the only one who feels suspicious - scared, even - that the Petrucci Haters haven't chimed in yet? They always do, with witty posts like:

"Why would you want crappy tone?"

"Why do you ask? Do you want to suck?"

"I think he used Behringer V-amps on that one, before he got wise and stepped up to DOD Grunge pedals for SDOIT."

So where are they? Like, are they waiting to pounce? Biding their time? Lurking in the shadows?

You know they're here... waiting... watching...

A Mesa Quad Pre will get you really close to his tone on the cheap, however I guess you'd then have to invest in a power amp.

Re: Amps Petrucci used on Scenes from A Memory

The best alternative to a IIC+ is either the Mark IV or the Mark III. Mark IV's are a tweaker's Holy Grail--lots of tones, but a steep learning curve.

The Mark III is a much simpler amp to operate and even a fully optioned EVM/EQ/REV/Simul-Class combo won't put too bad a dent in your wallet.

I have both Mark III and Mark IV combos, and love both; but my favorite gigging amp is my Mark III 200-Watt Coliseum head and its Mesa 412 C90/EVM Half-back cab. If it can get it loud enough, it is a glorious sounding amp.

He actually had an MKIV and an MKIIC+ both in a rack at that time, and IIRC, he slaved the IIC+ into the MKIV, but I know both were in the studio for the recording of that album.
