It's been on my mind for weeks!

If you bought a Marshall Amp or 'insert any other brand', would you insist on matching cabs?

Or do you think that it's all in the amp?

Or do you think that the combo of amp and cab is as significant?

Do you mix and match you manufacturers to get the perfect combo for your sound?

Re: Amps Vs Cab's Significance

I don't require matching cabs, but I will admit - it looks really, really cool onstage.

A lot of tone comes from the cabinet, and it should definitely not be overlooked.

That said, a crappy head through an awesome cabinet probably won't sound as good as an awesome head through a crappy cabinet.

Re: Amps Vs Cab's Significance

Both play an important role Mixing cab and amp brands is always a cool idea to get hint of one sound (from the cab) to add to the main tone coming from the amp. As long as the impedance matches, why not mix brands?

Re: Amps Vs Cab's Significance

Both are important - using different cabs and speakers should make it more interesting - I might be wrong but I think that Jeff Beck used American voiced speakers with a Marshall for example - and it should work quite as well in the other direction, just for example.

Re: Amps Vs Cab's Significance

I think they are both important and contribute. That said I think playing around can give interesting sounds but some amps are best with at least one set of matched cabs. Take AC30's for example they sound best with blues in an open back cab but if you mix that with a closed back marshall type cab it can give interesting sounds.

Re: Amps Vs Cab's Significance

I think the right cab fro the right amp is essential for good tone. Personally i found out that both my Engls sound their best when used with matching Engl cabs with V30s(and as Virtaul kevorkian said it just looks great). I treid both amps with mesas, engls and orange cabs so far all of them sounded great because all of them a high quality built cabs.

Re: Amps Vs Cab's Significance

Well, keep the opinions coming!

I posted this because of my quandry over which way to go on amps.

I'm really thinking hard on getting a Full stack. The question is given the amount of Floyd I play, I should obviously go Hi-Watt. however, for everything else Marshall is an obvious choice.

Aesthetically I like the Marshall look over Hi-Watt. My solution was to buy A Marshall stack, and then an aditional Hi-Watt amp.

Even if I spent the money on TWO stacks, which would be cool I only have physical room for one out at home at any time.

I'm sure that whichever way round I choose between these two great Manufacturers I'm not buying a crummy setup!

I personally think that it's mostly in the Amp, so long as your Cab's have quality speakers in them, and are designed with high grade acoustic software.
