Re: An Incoming NGD on my Birthday! FREE 1971 Fender Strat

In my opinion, just at the moment, this entire thread is a theoretical idea.

Implicit in the term New Guitar Day is the notion that the thread starter actually has his or her greasy paws on the instrument in question. Not on order from Sweetwater. Not on its way in a delivery van. Actually in da house. (Hence, the "pics or it didn't happen" clause.) Posting before this moment is the guitar equivalent of crying wolf. It used to be considered poor form.

Nathan. One favour that you could do yourself right away is to seek a seriously good repair tech capable of doing an old Fender justice. Obtain quotes for stuff like refretting and levelling. (As a rough guide, assume a minimum of ten AU$ per fret.) You might well need to look further afield than Newcastle, NSW. Take the time to get this aspect right.

Some of the derision that this thread has attracted is founded on past experience of young forum members, making outlandish and unsupported claims, tinged with unrealistic ambition. The guilty parties might wish to remain anonymous. Please do not add your name to that list.

I'm just starting the thread because it's as stated, an Incoming NGD. With the '71, I'll play it until the frets are worn down.. But I will get it refretted at my local store, which costs $69.

Hey bro have you actually seen the guitar?

Yes. He showed it to me on Skype the other day. Pretty cool looking, but it's not totally all original. It does however include the original electronics in the case and the original case candy.

Get your glasses on.:smash:

This '71 is a Sunburst guitar, but I don't have pics yet because I forgot to ask my mate for some. But he did show me the guitar and it does look nice. Once I get it, I am probably either going to keep it as a live guitar, or sell it to get a Gibson Les Paul

Guitar repair is often like many things in life. You get what you pay for.

Incoming NGD.

This is a contradiction in terms. One either has a new guitar or one does not.

I agree with Raph. The figure of AU$69 is a professional repairer's minimum bench charge.

Taking a guitar out of its case and giving it a thorough inspection could take between fifteen and thirty minutes. Ker-ching! :deal:

You can't be serious. A quality fret level and dress costs more than that. If anyone if doing refrets at that price, do not go to them under any circumstances; they will **** up your guitar something fierce.

The idea of a 1971 Strat with a refret being worth $15,000 is completely ridiculous to me. Guitars of that era and quality were the reason that the old ones started becoming valuable in the first place. They are not good or desirable guitars. A truly N.O.S.-quality one, i.e. a true closet classic, might bring that from a really weird collector, just as a museum piece, but good player examples of these guitars are highly unlikely to break even a quarter of that. Beaters to decent ones can be found for 1–2 grand.

$69 hahaha that's so silly it hurts to think about it.

$69 at Musos Corner is just the consultation price, but I'm guessing a refret would be $200-ish? The guitar is like what, nearly 40 years old? Yeesh.. And MM is just insane thinking a 70's Strat is worth $15k, It's worth around $7k at best, but in the condition that this guitar is in atm, It would probably be worth around $1500-2000?

The obvious question, yet to be asked, rosewood fingerboard or one-piece maple neck? A serious refret job on maple involves new clear coat.

Seriously? I got mine for 30 bucks (including leveling, polishing and crowning), plus the cost of Dunlop 6000 set. I am lucky I don't live in English-speaking world.

I'll post a pic in case this NGD turns sour.
