An over wound C-5/59 set?

Hi guys!

Does anyone have an opinion as to whether or not an over wound C-5 would balance with a 59 neck or even a Gibson Birstbucker Pro? I know the C-5 is about 14k+ and the 59 is 8.5k? anyway, I hear it is best to have two pickups very close in resistance for the right balance and that is why guys like Wagner has his pickups so close.....for example 8.6k bridge and 8.4k neck. Anyway, I am also assuming non of you have had issues with the C-5/59 so I am hoping an over wound C-5 (by 10% for more mids) wouldn't be much of an issue. I am hoping to keep my Burstbucker Pro neck in place as well.

Thanks all!

Well if you're gonna overwind the C-5 it'll probably still be a bit lower in output than the JB, and many people use the JB/59 combo with no problems

Actually, the '59n is only about 7.43k. I didn't realize til I read your post that it and the C5 were that far apart. They balance great in my Predator, so apparently, DC resistance mismatch isn't all that important. ;)

Oooh you might be on to something! I personally have no lack of mids issues yet but I have yet to try it in a full band situation. I have a very middy amp though and I set the mids at 3 o' clock so I have no issues with mids really.

The C5 is a nice angy and balanced pickup with a very twisted growl under gain. I agree it could use a touch more mids to be perfect. When played high up the neck of soloing it tends to be a little screechy. The overwoudn thing might solve this? The JB's leads are very creamy compared to the C5.

In any case the '59n is THE perfect match for it, it's got the same voicing but sounds a little more 'vintage'. I doubt it would be any different just because the C5 is wound a little hotter than usual.

This makes me wonder, what if the C5 was wound with a thicker gauge wire?

I can't get myself to spend the big bucks for boutique pickups so I am trying to make this work. I am thinking that more mids in the C-5 would give it that extra thickness and creamier leads? True? I like the Rio BBQ but sometimes too thick and one dimensional, plus the texas neck is too thick for an LP.

I am going to mention to the cusotm shop that I want the over wind to provide the extra mids thickness for thicker solos.

My C-5 is wound at 14.75k and still balances nicely with the PGn I pair it with.

Re: An over wound C-5/59 set?

The string moves with such a greater amplitude over the neck pickup than it does over the bridge pickup that if two pickups were wound identically the neck pickup would be ALOT LOUDER! The string can't move much over the bridge pickup because it's attached to bridge.

Bottem line: the 59N will sound fine and balance beautifully with either a stock 14.4K C5 or a 16.4K JB or even a Dimebucker!
