And my new amp day got a bit hairy

Let it B
Amp (dsl40c) came about 2 hours ago. Unbox, and plug it into my cab, and three things ...

1) surprised how much more low end..

2) Thought the green crunch mode would have more gain. But is big and fat and lives up to the classic moniker. Very JMP/JCM 2203/4-ish. It still has enough for me. Will use a Pedal goose for leads as I have done forever.

3) Red channel is much more thin and razor sharp. Buzzy bees tone. New tubes should help, but I didn't buy it for the ultra gain channel.

I jam around a bit at 40w and master at 11 oclock. Dial in. Sounds awesome. Drop to 20w and up master to between 12-1 oclock... Surprisingly good too. Even at 20w triode, it sounds so much better to me than my OR15 at full power.

Jam around for another 30 min.

glance out the window...See a state trooper drive up my street/up the mountain. I have a city cop for a neighbor, so not unusual for his buddies to be over.

2min later...city cop creeps up the mountain.....

Hmmmmm...

2min later...state trooper creeps down the mountain...

Rut Roh Raggy....

2 mi later state cop creeps back up the mountain and the city cop creeps down...

I shut the amp off and slam the door to my music room...which is carpeted and a big bed should be absorbing some db too....but...

I go outside to get the mail..of course the mail has been there for hours, but I figure I will take a looksee and see if they ask any questions on the next pass....as Im walking down the driveway...down comes another city officer, a flatbed with a car on it, a state trooper, and there is a guy in the backseat. They must have busted him, and towed the vehicle....IDK.

LOL..WTF...what a coinkydink...Damn near crapped my drawers...

I don't know, any time that the cops ever came by because we were playing too loud, they just knocked on the door, then when we answered, they would just ask us to turn it down and explain that they would not be so nice if they had to come back again later.
Oh and grats on the new amp!

Re: And my new amp day got a bit hairy

I miss the days of living in the countryside.

The least I'd keep my Tweaker at would be at 12 o' clock. If I wanted power tube juice, I'd get it up to 2 o' clock. By that point it was LOUD as hell. I did this all the time.
Nowadays I can't even bring it near 10 o' clock. Not that I've ever had cops or complaints, but it's an apartment now. Gotta be reasonable.

Re: And my new amp day got a bit hairy

Yep, even a 5 watt cranked could cause a disturbance to the neighbors if you lived in an apartment.

Re: And my new amp day got a bit hairy

yikes I would have been sketched out by those cops!
Happy NAD man.

The thing for me about the DSL was to treat it like 2 amps in the same box that you can't switch. The green channel and red channel are voiced too differently UNLESS the amp is pretty near cranked then somehow it starts to feel more balanced to me, but usually setting that warm up red will be too thin for green. But live on the green channel with a boost pedal and things should be perfect.
On the original DSLs there was a cap one could unsolder (easy to reverse) that revoiced the red channel to be much more like the green. I tried this but actually I undid it by the end! It took out some of the red channel's thickness that I liked.

Anyways congrats and enjoy, and know that I'm sitting over here with a bit of EL34 envy :)

Re: And my new amp day got a bit hairy

Maybe they dug the tunes and they were just out there dancing?

Re: And my new amp day got a bit hairy

Man, I miss living out in the country too. These days I live in a neighborhood with a set "quiet time" every day and of course at night so if I want to jam I have a short window to squeeze it in.

Anyway, the new amp sounds sweet, congrats on that man!

Re: And my new amp day got a bit hairy

The last time the cops showed up at our "big" jam room, they waited until we were finished with the tune, then knocked (or maybe we just didn't hear them while we were playing) and said that we sounded great but we had to turn it down. Couldn't have been sounding too bad :D

Re: And my new amp day got a bit hairy

I got some visits when I was cranking my old 50 watts back home in VA in my youth. When I opened the door one cop who was probably my age now said "ok Eddie Van Halen...you gotta turn that **** down"....I laughed..and complied..;)

I live on a mountain but I wouldn't call it "the country"....it's Danbury. Connecticut...an hour and a half from NYC. ;)

Im gonna throw my old yellow shield mullard in v1 tomorrow and see if I can get a quick clip up.

Re: And my new amp day got a bit hairy

I like that amp, i didn't like the speakers it came with much but to me the amp has classic Marshall tones.

Re: And my new amp day got a bit hairy

And forgot to say... Congrats man!
You make me want one of those.

Re: And my new amp day got a bit hairy

Congrats on the new amp! And that's awesome about thinking the Police were coming for you lol

I live in an Apartment and the loudest I've had my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe is between 2 and 3. No complaints from any of the neighbors. Sometimes I can hear their TVs so I know they can hear my guitar playing BUT we all kinda stay quiet around 8/9ish. I must live with a bunch of chill people because I haven't heard any of us complain.

..

The pentode triode thing is more useful with a 30,40, or 50 watt amp, than with 100w amps.

Re: And my new amp day got a bit hairy

Worst that would've happened is you woulda had to turn it down. I've been eyeing these amps for a while. My Vox AD50VT is going on 10 years old. It's still cooking just fine, no issues, but ya never know.

Re: And my new amp day got a bit hairy

Congrats!
I assume this is a head? Not a combo?

DSL40C ...combo!

Let those tubes break in as well. My buddy has the jcm2000 DSL 100, he did a few simple mods that really made the red channel more usable...he has the best DSL I've heard! Don't know if its the same in the 40c however but something to look into!

Re: And my new amp day got a bit hairy

I never played one but there's tons of awesome YouTube vids with these, they're on my list of amps to try out for sure. I love Marshall tone. Rock on brother!
