I'm gathering items for an AS tele build but have a question about the neck pickup ( '59) wiring. In the fender diagram, it shows a four conductor wire but the '59 has a single conductor. Do I need to order a custom shop pup or is there something else as a substitute? Also, what would the sound difference be between a neck or bridge pup in the neck position for such a build?

Fender used to have a webpage that told the story of Summers' mongrel Telecaster. (Added below.) Neither of the pickups in the instrument was stock.

I didn't think the 4-wire version of the 59 was any more than 'an option', rather than a 'shop floor custom'. I've got one here that came out of one of my Tokai, in fact that had one 4-wire and one 'vintage', with both wired as 'vintage' - nothing too special about it at all, they just used what they had available.

yep 4 wire is not even shop floor custom, it's available as a regular package option.
I luv Andy's work. I saw an MJ custom shop order for an Andy Summers spec pickup set I think it was a little different than 59? but when the sig tele came out word was it had a 59??

No. There is some sort of buffer/pre-amp thingy built in, hot enough to drive a valve amplifier into distortion. The extra metal control knob governs this.

So, other than the phase switch, the pickup switching is normal... you can use a single conductor '59, if it's what you have on hand. Excellent. Thank you!

LPB-1 could be just as likely what was originally built into the guitar as anything and on the floor is much nicer than the big whole in Andy's tele
What was originally in Andys guitar was the guts of some 70s boost circuit, could have been an LPB-1, MXR Micro Amp, Alembic Stratoblaster?
