Angus Young tone for custom guitar

Re: Angus Young tone for custom guitar

something you should know: The "AC/DC tone" does not really come from Angus. It mostly comes from Malcolm. Because of this if you really want that really creamy low output tone, you should try some gretsch Filtertrons.
now, does Angus have a nice tone? Hell yes. But it is not the tone you seem to be looking for.

Who wants to play like Malcolm? Angus is the one to emulate baby.

Re: Angus Young tone for custom guitar

wtf?! malcolm young is AC/DC!

listen to back in black 1 speaker at a time, and tell me how similar their tones and playing styles are.

re the OP, if i was going for angus' tone in that guitar i'd look for a pearly gates plus for the bridge and probably a '59 for the neck. it helps if you're a midget playing as hard as you can, as far as i can tell.

malcolm's sound is really heavy strings and a filtertron.

i do agree on the cranked plexi having a lot to do with both.

Re: Angus Young tone for custom guitar

Well I meant its not day or night. There are going to be subtle differences as they don't have the exact same rig. I prefer Angus's tone actually.

Re: Angus Young tone for custom guitar

Yeah Angus's tone rocks, but the tone people most associate with AC/DC is actually Malcolm's.

I listen to AC/DC for the solos, as do a number of players. The majority of the songs outside of the Back in Black album are pretty lame.

Re: Angus Young tone for custom guitar

I mostly like the stuff with Brian Johnson. They had better tone and was choppier and more grind in my opinion. Defined Rock better for what I think.

Re: Angus Young tone for custom guitar

Thank you for all the input guys, I appreciate it.
I guess I'll clarify a bit. I did mention Angus specifically, maybe I shouldn't have. But also as important as getting Angus is getting a pickup that works for the rest, ZZ Top, Zeppelin, etc. I'm pretty sure that most PAF stlyes would work, but I'm not that knowledgable about pickups.

BTW, I tend to prefer Back and Black and earlier overall. I just fing Bon's songwriting to be a bit better, and i just get a good vibe from him. Guitar-wise, I love Powerage, Highway to Hell, and TNT.

Re: Angus Young tone for custom guitar

i think the pearly gates would do fine for all those bands. it will nail the zz top tones for sure

Re: Angus Young tone for custom guitar

So the consensus seems to be PG's mostly. That will probably be what I go with.

Should I leave the bridge with an a2 or go for the Angus mod and have an a5 to lose some mids?

Re: Angus Young tone for custom guitar

Why are you guys so hung up on the C5?
Angus wouldn't be caught dead with a high output pickup...he went from PAFs to T-tops to PGs. And it has been stated that he does not play with a lot of gain. The custom line is just too hot. But the C5 does have the correct EQ...

I say '59

Re: Angus Young tone for custom guitar

You should be focusing on the amp before the pickups.

And yes, Malcolm's sound has as much to do with AC/DC as Angus does. I listen to AC/DC as much for the rhythm as for the leads. Honestly, I can't decide which I like better.

I know, i know, i need the cranked marshalls. But like i said, this is going into a custom guitar, ie it has no pickups. Im not going to wait until i get an expensive new amp to buiy pickups, right?

So, PG or PG+5 for the bridge?

Re: Angus Young tone for custom guitar

angus is almost all bridge pup and from what i hear its a pearly gates. that and a cranked nmv marshall and a handful of great rock licks and youre golden

+1
Plus if you roll off the volume on the guitar a bit you´ll have a nice rythm sound :)
Then full blast for solo´s

Re: Angus Young tone for custom guitar

Let me give you guys a little something to think about.
Take a SH-2B Jazz and put in the bridge of your SG.
Turn up the master volume on your amp being on a clean setting from the start and when you pass 6 on the master volume the amp should be starting to breakup and you´re getting power amp distortion = cranked.
I´ll get back later on with an explanation to this and remeber we all have different thought´s on how to achieve a certain tone.

Re: Angus Young tone for custom guitar

C5 or Angus Sig for Bridge - 59' or Pearly Gates for Neck.

Re: Angus Young tone for custom guitar

PS - There's a couple great clips on Youtube by a guy named "Solo Dallas" playing an SG with the Angus Sig into a Plexi. Sounds good!
