i recently put regular screws in place of all the hex screws and stuck an A8 mag in it.

Nice! Most of my guitars are beaters lol..

I recently got my first guitar (Destroyer) back from the guy I sold it to 5 years ago. It's in ruins, But I'm working on it....hopefully restore some of it's former Metal Glory :D

As for now....

Update...

Destroyer_Fixed_BlueBackground_Sharp_iii.jpg

-New tuners
-Non recessed Floyd Rose 'special' bridge to replace the rusty old Ibby one..
-New routes (and a fine touch up paint job ) for 2 singles + pup rings....so it goes from HH to HSS...
-Dimarzio Chopper (n), Fast track 1 (m) & X2N (b) pup's

I just need to change a few other things (switches/knobs/jack/locking nut), wire it all up with a mini switch for coil tapping & a killswitch.. and It's good to go :)

Meet the beater. circa 1980 Yamaha FG-335 II bk. Bought new for 200 dollars. I played every 300 and under guitar in town and this one was the only one that didn't sound like a cigar box with strings. It might be all plywood but after 30 years of banging on it, it has opened up. The next is big and beefy. I can't remember the last time I used the truss rod. The finish is all sorts of checked and cracked. Worst case was mid 90's. Broken heater in my car and a 10 degree morning. I've got to get to the radio station and run the Sunday morning tapes. You know, the weekly news magazine shows and the church services...all that public service programing. I called it the "God Squad" shift. Six hours of Sominex on various reel and cassette tapes. So of course you take the guitar because it not like anybody else who works there will be up at 6am on a Sunday. Plus even if they were it's not like they'll make it past the AM control room because it just before the transmitter room and that's full of big boxes with transmitting bits and racks of gear that important people need not concern themselves. But that OK because the AM talent and the station engineer don't want to talk to them either.

Anyhoo...5 minutes into a 10 minute drive the back of the guitar starts to really contract and...POP!...Wait a second...POP, POP. Oh crap..foot in the gas ...too late...at least a dozen more pops before I can get her inside. Oh well...just a flesh wound as a wise man once said.

My favorite beater is my Bork O Caster! It's a really cheap SX Strat from Rondo that has been experimented on a lot. I like it in it's current config w/ a single Dimebucker in the bridge. For a really cheap guitar, it plays and sounds pretty dam good. I stuck a sticker of Chef and wrote BORK! on a blue piece of masking tape on the headstock. Hence the name Bork O Caster.

These are beaters, but I LOVE these things.

Bought cheap, modded cheap, treated cheap. Nice player and a decent ghetto Yng-caster.

I can just start the "Ultimate Beater" thread now....

You know, the thing about the beater to me, is you just have to play it with that Keith Richards "I don't care" Joe Perry "Swagger" and Neil Schon "Chops"

Nothing beats somebody putting all three of those down on a beat@$$ wreck of a guitar.

Oh my God. A knob literally screwed into the wood??

I've been thinking about getting a squier Jaguar just to carry around for giggles.

Re: another "beater" guitar thread... because they're frikkin awesome.

I recently gave this guitar to my son, after it being my #1 gigging guitar. After I joined an instrumental surf band as the bass player, the band opted to have me and one of the guitarists switch for one set, or at least a few songs. The lead player used a PRS, the player I switched off on bass used a Strat, so I opted for a CIJ Jazzmaster with Seymour Duncan Vintage JM pickups. When the Strat player changed to an American Vintage Jazzmaster, I wanted a nastier tone to play Rumble and other growly instrumentals so I bought a blonde Squier 51. It came with a white one-ply pickguard, so I changed it to a black/cream/black three-ply, and added black straplocks. I found the rustier and flatter the roundwound string were, the better it sounded, and soon the fret all started turning green. I never cared for the tone of the single coil near the neck, so I put in a Seymour Duncan lipstick to give it a chime it needed. Shortly after this photo was taken, I changed the pickup selector knob for a big old three way toggle switch so I could quickly select the pickup(s) I wanted.

I tried using a sparkle pink DiPinto Galaxie 4 for a few gigs, but now I use a Classic Series '50's Strat with Seymour Duncan '60's Surf for Strat pickups, and a few other custom car style modifications including a Herb Martinez pinstripe paint job.

Got 2 and lets start with the Lotus;

Got it to mod. Repainted it, got a h,h loaded guard, and a new Schaller Floyd.

Finally got a neck with a lock nut from an Ibanez RG470, dropped an EMG 81/85 set with a custom LED lit guard from Terrapin.

Got rid of the EMGs and need to solder the passives up.

Then a Craigslist score for $60. The cool part is that it already had the old school Gotoh Floyd on it. Its a Westone something;

Repainted, Wammi-World for the missing lock nut parts, swapped the Select for a DD, lemon oil, dropped an ESP rail in the neck, replaced the mini toggles and wiring, added a momentary push button kill, and reinstalled the Select. Might repaint it with glow-in-the-dark paint. :P

This headless used to be Strat shaped but, as I was travelling a lot with it, I took a bandsaw to it: a bit of minimising. The bridge position humbucker was replaced with a Hot-Rails and a Little 59 glued together with switching that can put them in or out of phase with each other or the 2 single coils. Thinking of a bridge transducer to get acoustic tones in the mix too. Got to work that out yet.Headless_2.jpg

My beater Tele with a 59 Sd bridge in the neck and an unknown vintage bridge pickup. What guitar would not be complete without a way to open a beer. It looks like junk but sounds dang good. Took the flip switch out and put more to my liking on off ones in.
