Another easily impressed Gen Z guitarist...

Pretty much, LOL.

Honestly, anything Dimebag related is like that.

I like Pantera. They were my favorite band for a while. But they're like that, LOL.

I went through Arlington, TX briefly on the way with a friend's band. They also played a show in Austin.

My home Arkansas is basically a colony of Texas or like how Canada is to the U.S. or Austria is to Germany or Norway is to Sweden or NZ is to Australia or something.

I've just gotten that Dime vibe my whole life (the doom/Crowbar sludge scene is big here), so when the Swedes came charging hard in the mid 90s it was really refreshing.

Once Zakk grew a beard and started Black Labeling he took over as the emulated guitarist down here. I still think of him as a 19 year old Randy clone.

I don't mind dooming if they incorporate some melody like Candlemass or something but man I have heard "I'm Broken" and "Five Minutes Alone" and "This Love" and "Cowboys from Hell" enough.

Pantera will always hold a place in my heart. But yeah, I do think people tend to give them more credit than they're do. They're not as heavy as everyone makes them out to be, IMO. Dimebag was great, though. But at the same time, they always came off as a bunch of racist ignorants.

I just saw them as using a lot of cliched licks that resonates deeply with the Southern soul--like Skynyrd. I much preferred Dime's earlier solos even though the style/look/lyrics were silly.

I think the band were mostly cool and it was Phil on heroin who was the biggest problem. He still seems disingenuous to me and I think the Pantera tribute thing is a cash grab. I think the other guys' hearts are in the right place though.

I like Anselmo best when he's not "singing" (and not in Pantera) :laugh2:

(Sidebar: ^^ What an album!!!) RIP Killjoy..

I mean...I liked Cowboy's( not crazy about it but it was good) & to an extent Vulgar display....but after that his singing really started getting on my nerves....the whole crappy "tuff guy" hardcore thing. Pretty sure that's what led to modern thrash/metalcore yelping etc... and there's nothing I hate more than that ****.....

Phil's new vocal style has its place but it's overused, especially by metalcore bands who don't want to do the whole Cradle of Filth cookie monster shriek thing but still don't want to clean sing.

Phil was an excellent singer until 1992-4 or so. He could hit some Halford notes. His voice still had soul on the first Down record.

He just took terrible care of his body and was too lazy to practice. He will readily admit he can't sing "Cemetery Gates" anymore, IMO their best song. So no need to see them live.

He lost a lot of fans with that “white power” thing at Dimebash. I don’t care what his real beliefs are, it doesn’t matter. That’s the most needlessly stupid thing he’s ever done, more so than heroin ever was.

Eh, thread will get political if I go into this too much, but he is just expressing views that a lot of frustrated Southern people still quietly hold that came to the fore in 2016. That's all I'll say about that.

Just sucks the dude has to be that way.

I won't say he lost fans. I'll say he lost some and gained some others depending upon opinions. Robb Flynn's response was equally divisive, which is a shame.

I don't think he meant anything political by it, TBH. He hardly even can form a sentence nowadays. Wether we all agree with his views or not is irrelevant. What he did is just something stupid while being drunk and/or high. We've all done it, except what he did is kind of a big deal because he's a public figure with a track record of not being very smart.

What I think is sad is he brought a bunch of people out of the woodwork who should have felt bad about what he said but didn't.

Honestly, I could'nt care less about a musician's personality and personal views/beliefs or w/e. If they make good music I'll listen to it....it's not like I'm going to hobnob with or even see most of these guys anyway..

I find people getting so butthurt about stuff like that/having tantrums etc pretty pointless & lame. I could'nt care less whether Craig Pillard is a Nazi or not ...I like Incantation/Disma etc so I'll rock them. It does'nt mean I share his opinions or political views...

Most of the time I can't understand black metal vocals enough to be offended by them. I'd just prefer not to support distasteful views--although I suppose anything on YouTube now gets a fraction of a cent due to ads. If I'm not paying to hear it, though, I don't mind listening to anything to steal riffs.

I'm just disappointed in Phil a lot like I'm disappointed in Mustaine from time to time. Childhood heroes and such. One thinks ah man you're better than thinking like that.

Phil I think has genuinely learned. A lot of his fans, though, will just dismiss anyone who disagrees with them as a snowflake. It sucked to see the fans divided over something that shouldn't have been a debate in the first place.

But you know, defying authority and asserting individualism by canceling SJWs and all that.

Well the whole PC thing in general has become overly whingy-whiny and irritating imo...especially when it spills over into the music/metal scene. Back in the 80's Kreator had "no thanks to the gays for spreading aids" in their liner notes for Terrible Certainity (or it might have been the "Out of tthe dark ep.." I forget which) and no one thought twice about it or made a fuss. Of course nowadays Mille's very ashamed and contrite about it and said he made a mistake ...but it was pretty much a non-issue before. If you liked Kreater you bought their CD's (or did'nt) End of story....

I don't usually use "Phil" and "learned" in the same sentence. I'm not sure he's even capable of after heroin fried his brain. Evidence of that is he's still high all the time when he literally died from OD.

But I completely agree. Childhood heroes and all. It's really hard seeing him barely able to speak at this point.

Not so much unable to speak or whatever (or strangely performing barefoot), but just thinking stuff you think would be beneath them.

That said I hate seeing Mustaine perform now. He can barely sing and his neck fusion messed his mobility up badly.

Tom Araya went out on top I think. Said he wanted to quit because he couldn't move around anymore because of his neck fusion and traveling.

Kerry is looking good for his age.

Het seems okay but it's dumb seeing him smoke cigars on the M72 tour. It's just going to make his voice worse.

Scott Ian seems immortal.

People can't be shocked anymore...just angered. Doesn't do any good to be all rock star and press boundaries. No one's impressed.

Pretty sure Trent Reznor had that convo with Marilyn Manson after the misconduct and assault charges came out.

A message does matter to me to some extent. I love Andy LaRoque's guitar playing in King Diamond. But the cheesy shock rock lyrics turn me off so badly I just listen to the solos isolated from the songs.

I don't think it's a question of being shocked anymore. It just about appreciating the imagery. Much as I love/worship Andy LaRocque..I love the whole package...cheesy or not.

In fact.. I am a huge sucker for cheese/atmosphere/imagery and the like....It might be old news for most...but I'm no spring chicken & have a sentimentall/nostalgic nature in general ..so for me stuff like that never ever gets old :bigthumb:
