Another idiot does a Jimmy Page Wiring

I just got finished wiring a Telecaster Deluxe I am building with the Jimmy Page wiring as posted on the Seymour Duncan Wiring Diagram link under support. I have read many of the threads here and am losing my mind with different versions of this wiring. Given the fact that I used the Seymour Duncan schematic for this wiring I have several questions and I hope someone might be able to help me.

1. Since I followed that diagram exactly, what else do I have to add to make it work. Everyone has been talking about it not being properly grounded? Do I need to route a single wire throughout the guitar patching in a wire from each pot, the three-way, and the jacks, Bridges also?)? Or what? If I do have to route a ground wire throughout, where do I ground it to? I have not shielded. I have used a bridge ground as indicated in the diagram. The only thing that looks to me like it is not explained is the one solder point on the bridge volume pot and it indicates that is the earth ground so I figure I might just need to run a ground from there to get it grounded. I am definetlt very confused about this grounding issue.

2. Is there any need to use shielded wire for the long wires that run from the 3-way to the pots and the input jack? What gauge wire is recommedned? What about ground wires if needed from question 1?

3. I wired off of the schematic as pictured but was somewhat confused about the actual orientation of the bottom six pins of the push-push pot I am using. As long as I consistently followed the same orientation will I be alright? For instance if I actually inverted them all as long as they are all inverted will it do anything to prevent it from working?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Another idiot does a Jimmy Page Wiring

Well thanks for the bad news, you are right, they really should change it. It was also in Guitar World, where I got the original diagram and bright idea from. I hope I have not ruined $50.00 worth of pots with their diagram.

So using the diagram you posted, where do I hook the ground from each pot to? And, is ther no need for a bridge grouns? Idon't see one on this diagram.

Aslo, I notice the 3-way is hooked up with the two center posts split, is that correct, ther do not touch? Also, I noticed no use of th back connection on the 3-way, is it not used?

So...., at this point I assume my best bet is to start fresh huh? Any suggestions on how to salvage the four pots without frying them by heating every connection to remove all of the wiring? Will one of those little bulb blowers work?

Re: Another idiot does a Jimmy Page Wiring

The second re-wiring I ever did was the Page system, and it came out fine. It isn't that hard. Just take your time and follow the diagram. If you have to take a break & come back later, no big deal. Don't rush it & don't get frustrated. Do one pot a night if you feel overwhelmed. Slow down to the point you feel comfortable. Nice and easy.

Re: Another idiot does a Jimmy Page Wiring

Hi Guys,

The diagram works fine. Because of the fact that it already looks like an overwhelming bowl of spaghetti, though, I left out the ground wires. I was comfortable with leaving them out because I assumed (wrongly) that anyone trying this would know that the pots need grounding. I'll add a note to the diagram to help avoid confusion with this wiring in the future.

Take your time. If you rush through this one, you WILL make mistakes.

Also, bear in mind that, when wired correctly, there are some 'quirks' that go along with this set-up. The most notable is the fact that, when the series knob is pulled, one of the volumes doesn't work, AND one of the 3-way switch settings does not work (meaning, no sound). This is normal for this set-up, but often times leads people to believe they have made a mistake---when they haven't.

Happy soldering!

Thanks Scott:
I am happy to get a reply from you. I was surprised you guys would have a bad diagram up without correcting it, especially after publishing it in Guitar Player. I will look for the version with the grounds and add them once it is updated.
