Another Josh Homme Tone Question

I've been listening to sick sick sick quite a bit lately. There's a few points where he breaks into this cool part on the guitar right after the chorus and his guitar gets really fuzzed out and crunchy. Does anyone know a pedal that can get that sound? I'd like to have something like that for leads.

Re: Another Josh Homme Tone Question

I think it's probably a fuzz with a gain boost on top of it...or regular distortion with crazy fuzz on top. in any case, you'll have to stack pedals or gain stages!

I'd suggest that ZVEX Fuzz Factory for all your QOTSA fuzz needs.

I thought the zvex sounded like a good bet, just wasn't sure. They seem like cool little units.

Re: Another Josh Homme Tone Question

I think alot of it is his amps and how he records them.

I believe he uses 2 Ampeg bass amps, with their cabinets facing inwards towards each other with mic/s between.

I was curious how much difference this would make compared to just micing up the 2 amps separately. I tried it myself when I had a spare day in the studio and was quite pleased with the results.

There was definitely something 'different' between the 2 recorded sounds, but we could never really work out what it was (sounds strange I know, but we couldn't explain it! :smack:)

Re: Another Josh Homme Tone Question

Yeah a lot of his tone is from the amazing crunchy warmth of the Ampeg V4. Puttin more fuzz on top of that thing is just begging for sweetness in tone. Another thing he almost always does is use the neck humbucker with the tone knob down all the way...at least he did that a lot back when he was in KYUSS.

Josh Homme is one guy who I think will go down as a 'guitar legend' where, you know, in ten or fifteen years he's got a signature amp, guitar and Digitech multieffect pedal with all the digitized processed tones from his hit singles in it.

I mean any way you slice it, QOTSA is one of the best rock acts in the mainstream today...and they play actual ROCK MUSIC, not nu-metal or anything like that. I have a hard time finding tunes by them I don't like...the opposite is usually true.
