I can't listen to the clips here at work, but the 59 is a WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY underrated pickup, IMO. WAY underrated. I've had them in Paulas, Explorers, A Heritage, a super strat, and a Hamer, and they sounded phenomenal in each guitar. May not have been the exact tone I wanted w/ a particular axe or at a given time, but they always sound REALLY good.

I can't listen to the clips here at work, but the 59 is a WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY underrated pickup, IMO. WAY underrated. I've had them in Paulas, Explorers, A Heritage, a super strat, and a Hamer, and they sounded phenomenal in each guitar. May not have been the exact tone I wanted w/ a particular axe or at a given time, but they always sound REALLY good.

Record it.

Things sound different when ya record them. Especially levels of gain. I just recorded some clips the other night, and had to back off my gain quite a bit cos it just sounds like too much. Also in the context of a song, things sound different..bass especially and drums make guitars sound beefier.

You can of course try to raise the pup too, and ya gotta make sure ya got an appropriate amp and guitar. Which Ibanez do you have? what body wood?

I could get very convincing "brown sounds" out of my 1987X with Heritage 150 and 59s believe it or not...

don't underestimate fingers and brain in the tonal chain!

the guy that did that VH clip used a $150 kramer striker! :smack:

I have to say this that whatever amp he used to record those clips it sounds like a real P.O.S?
it sounds really buzzy,thin and harsh

Basswood IMO and the 59 prolly aren't the best combo tonally at least to get that sound....I haven't tried it myself, but I've had a few basswood guitars and IMO like the JB in a Paula there would be too much frequency "overlap/overkill" w/ a 59/BW combo......I think ya really need a darker sounding wood like alder (not dark necc but "thicker" sounding) and Mahogany for a 59 to work it's magic.

For your guitar to approach that sound I believe I'd rather go with a Custom or Custom Custom and drop the pup a bit lower than normal. Or a slightly overwound 59 through the custom shop.

I thot that was him...but wasn't sure

chances are thats a Marshall SL or his 5150 combo...and he's the only guy I know who can get a good sound out of a 5150

Hard to tell here on my compy speakers...everything sounds "mehhh"

I will say David Bray and VHolic can NAIL the brown sound.....(check out brays other clips with the EVH loaded strat)

someone just gave me that david bray link today..I scoped it out..sounds good..I still think Vholic gets as close as anyone...

and I can't remember which amp he used for that runnin' clip...

back to the thread though....all those pups sound scarily alike..so much so that I would have a tough time picking out one above the others..sure, there's slight differences..but they all sound similar to me

Killer clip. I find the Voodoo 59 has more power than the rest but the EVH has a slight fuller tone that I like. Really great comparison between all those pickups.

I think the Holmes really stands out. It's more open and articulate to my ears than the rest. I liked that one the most.

out of all the pickups the 59b sounded very good on the evh riff and nailed the tone on the lynch riff and wasn't as good on the zakk riff .

the evh had a nice growl and was great on the zakk riff and nailed the evh riff , not as good on the lynch but close

the holmes was good on all of the riffs but then again for the cash it should be !

the voodoo didn't do it for me it had a lot of hum / buzz and it just didn't get "the sound" on these riffs

just what i heard on computer speakers .

Wow, the SD EVH sounded a lot more "glassy" than I would have expected. The high end almost had a single coil type presence. Interesting! I think I liked the Holmes best. It seemed to have the more pleasing harmonics and less top end frizz. The 'SD '59 and Voodoo both got pretty harsh on the top end. What guitar/amp was this with?

I agree..the Holmes was pretty darn good on each clip, but there something goin on in the top end I didn't like....uneven winds or something...

I didn't like the voodoo 59 at all...tubby bottom end..ratty top end...prolly better for lower gain....

The EVH was full and had nice even mids, but I liked the plain ole 59 B best..it had the tightest bass and treble, and has that cool lower mids thing going on without too much in the high mids...

I liked the Holmes and the EVH best and both sounded like alnico 2. The 59B and Voodoo both sounded thinner and the highs sounded a little more splashy...both sounded like alnico 5.

I wonder if he reset the EQ for each pickup or if he played all four with one EQ and volume setting? The former would point out how they all differ, but playing all four with one EQ and volume setting wouldn't bring out the best tone from each pickup.
