Another Pickup advice thread

I'll keep it straight to the point.

I have a penco les paul which is mahogany with some type of laminated top. The neck is mahogany and rosewood. It has more of an sg sound than a fender sound when played acoustically.

The sound I want: Lateralus by Tool. I'm looking for that chunky, well distorted sound.

A couple of other factors: I have a ibanez les paul made very similer to this one which has a custom 5 in the bridge and a pg in the neck, so I would like the penco to compliment the les paul and diversify my sound. Also, I was thinking of going with a ceramic magnet, and wanted to know how much that could get me in the lateralus direction.

**Edit: I would be willing to go with a different brand than seymour duncan if the situation calls for it.

A Custom would get you very, very close, I think.

If you're thinking Bare Knuckle then this guy pretty much nails it with Nailbombs...

The real secret to Adam's tone is his Marshall. I think a 59 set with an older Marshall could get you the sound that you want.

Appreciate the pun.

Ha! That was actually totally unintentional. Thanks for noticing though. :D

I think both of those could get you pretty close, though the Cold Sweat is apparently a bit more versatile. If you're considering Bare Knuckles then I highly recommend shooting off an Email to Tim. His customer service is legendary and he really knows his stuff. If you haven't already posted on the BK forums then you should do that too. There's some really heplful people there and most of them are pretty knowledgable (not to mention fanatical) about BK products. This thread in particular should prove helpful.

As others have said though, the main things to consider is the amp and more than anything his style.

Best of luck.

I got a bogner alchemist. Its fantastic and can get that Tool tone to a T. And yeah, I'm going to shoot Tim an email (I read about alot of people doing that). My only beef is, $, but I have peace of mind having it very narrowed down.

As far as the BK forum goes: while my band loyalty may not be strictly limited to seymourducan pickups, it is limited to the seymourduncan forum :14:
