Another 'what amp?' thread!!!

Hey guys. I have a Marshall DSL 100 which is about to get the boot. The more I play it, the more I realize that it's not the amp for me. It has some cool features, but it's lacking in too many ways. The tone scoop button is useless to me. The bass boost is nice, but I don't like how it softens the highs, if that makes sense. Again the solo boost adds a bit of gain and it seems to liquid up the tone - not what I'm after.

I am looking for a 'raw' or 'open' sounding amp capable of modern high gain. Let's not confuse that with harsh though...Something that is fairly tight on the low end would be nice. I play mainly hard rock, but I throw in equal parts metal, classic rock and blues.

I've contemplated a few different moves. One being sending the Marshall to FJA (or someplace else) to get modded. I have also thought of selling or trading it to get something else. A Peavey 5150 (or any of its variations) has peaked my interest as have Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifiers.

Advise and/or other suggestions are welcome.

If you need flexibility, tightness and a rather raw sound, look an Engl Savage 120. Alle the four channels are great and definitely outdo both mesa and peavey

My BEST advice is send your amp to Jeff Seal in Houston Texas. His personal 2210 is half Blackface twin, half unholy beast.

The problem you are going to run into with the different styles is that many amps today do not respond well to volume and pick nuances like the amps of yore did. That's part of the missing magic.

I sent him my 2204 and after it was all said and done I couldn't be happier. Beastly tones that get passably clean when I roll down the volume and switch to the neck pup.

Re: Another 'what amp?' thread!!!

i wouldn't reccomend a 5150 for your style

given that you want classic rock & blues tones, and have an EL34 amp right now, i can almost guarantee you'll hate the mids

mesa=buzzy & harsh. period. IMO.

if i were in that boat i'd go for one of the "hot rodded marshall" amps, like VHT, soldano, splawn, etc.

maybe a bogner ecstacy if you can swing it

Re: Another 'what amp?' thread!!!

Lots of people say Mesa is harsh, blah, blah blah, etc. Try one and see what you think.......they have a reputation and longevity for a reason. I remember the 80's, everyone had to have a JCM800. Then came the 90s and JCM800s were junk, everyone needed either a vintage Fender or a Dual Recto.

Well, its now, and JCM800s are fashionable again you see the point? Get what you like and I wouldn't worry about our opinions too much. The JCM800 is a classic, as is the Dual Recto, but they sound very different from each other and both have earned the repuation they have for performance and sound. Let us know what you end up with.
