Antiquities and hgh gain?

Is anyone here using antiquity humbuckers with high gain amps? I want that classic PAF tone for lower gain tones, but I want to be able to dime the gain on my amp when I need to. Will I have to worry about micro phonics ruining quick stops and starts?

Re: Antiquities and hgh gain?

It will probably squeal. I would recommend a Dimarzio PAF or definitely a potted Bareknuckle Mule if you have the $$$.

Re: Antiquities and hgh gain?

It depends on what you are calling high gain.

I use Ants in my 58 reissue LP and have NO issues at all, now in terms of gain I run various pedals as boosters into smaller amp or often a Rangemaster clone into a pedal or into a cranked amp as well as various fuzz pedals and have no issues...

Ants are not like PAF's in the respect that they were made in a hurry with no reguards to the end result...Ants are wound tight enough that they don't squeel like you might think they do.

If you are curious there is a clip in the tips and clips room of me playing some guitar work on a cover of Eleanor Rigby...in the clip I used my Les Paul wiht Ants into a pair of small amps that were fairly loud and being slammed wiht a Fuzz Face...maybe not the high gain tone you had in mind but still a lot of gain and I had no issues with noise.

Also, in the clip during the verses you'll hear some clean parts...same guitar, same amps and same Fuzz Face just with the guitars volume rolled back...Ants have a beautiful clean tone as well as sounding great overdrive or in this case FUZZED out!

Here is a link if you are interested.

I use various unpotted pickups into high gain (Dual Rectifier or Mark V). I don't generally have issues unless it's also high volume. I keep an MXR Smart Gate on my board as a backup plan.

'Ants and high gain?' Why the hell not?

Because I have no experience with non potted pickups, and my amp will pump out a ton of gain... and I play hard rock... Just wanting to make sure that I don't drop large jack and can't use the pickups.

Don't have any Ant HBs (yet!) but I do have various P90s and Jaguar models. With high gain, the Ant P90 does that Neil Young Old Black filth. IMO, on a Fender Jaguar, microphonics are precisely what that guitar is all about. I make a feature of them a la Marc Ribot.

Re: Antiquities and hgh gain?

When I had Ants I played through a Crate Blue Voodoo and a Line 6 Vetta using the various Mesa Boogie and Insane type patches with no problems, as long as I was about five feet from the amp.
