Antiquities VS Seth Lovers for my Gibson ES-333

I've been reading online that they're sort os similar, people tend to prefer the seths over the 59s as well from what I can see. The stock pickups aren't doing it for me, which of these sets would you recommend? I'm looking for something PAF styled that will let me get the most tone out of my guitar. I love the antiquities in my firebird, but are there other options? It's kind of a big hit right now $$$.

Re: Antiquities VS Seth Lovers for my Gibson ES-333

I recently tried Seth Lovers again and found them to be very plain, boring and overall uninspiring...

That doesn't mean they are bad but for me the Ants have more attitude, personality and vibe.

For me, Seths are the best pickups for a thin line semi-hollow.

Here's a great review of Seths by the general manager of one of the historical guitar brands, after he listened to a set of Seths in his thin line:

Yes, I annoyed my family at ridiculous volumes.

As soon as I was able to really give these a test, my days of working as a guitar repairman in Stockholm, and working with vintage Gibsons from the 1950’s immediately came to mind. Clean tones were very transparent, where the actual tone of the strings really stuck out. You can really hear how you approach the string, playing with your fingers or with a pick. Some pickups can sound somewhat compressed, but these really opened up and kept opening up.

I was playing these through a 30 watt top (2x 6L6), and a 2x12 closed cab, so the 6L6’s can really deliver a clean punch without breaking up or compressing like EL34’s. They really do sound very clear, and have a nice tonal balance to them.

Neck pickup was just like a real vintage pickup. Pretty bassy where the top end really rolled off (but the clarity was still there), which is what one would expect to hear from a real “vintage” pickup. When I dialed in some gain, I would not think that they were the same pickups. Due to the clarity of the pickups, when overdriven, these seem to really pop out. I had to adjust my tone controls on the amp to tame some of the frequencies. Since the pickups are Alnico 2’s, you can make the amp work harder, and get a heck of a lot more out from the guitar and really punch in, when you want to.

I am going to keep playing these for a while in this guitar, but have to throw these into a solid body as well, just to compare.

I think that the best way to describe these is a completely “vintage” tone. I test a lot of different pickups (soldering iron is always close on hand), where I can usually judge a pickup pretty quickly and their characteristics. These are different. I feel even from what I heard and liked, that there is more to these that still remains to be discovered. Even compared to vintage 50’s pickups, these offer something very simular but it seems that there is more under the hood. Kind of like sitting with a nice wine or whiskey. One cannot simply take a quick sip and judge it, but sit with it for a longer period of time to really understand what makes it special.

I got a deal on a set of antiquities I could not refuse. I was very close to ordering the Seths though! Thank you for your feedback.

Another vote for Seth's! My favorite Duncan.

I have an Ant set, but much prefer Seth's (and have a few sets of them).

There's always the return period...

If the ants are anything like the ones i have in my firebird in terms of quality, they're keepers!

What music are you playing?
What amp/fx?

With that guitar - Ants, Seths, 59's….you can't go wrong.

As far as what music, I want the guitar to be as close to vintage gibson as possible. I want the tone of the guitar itself to shine through. High output pickups don't really enable that.

I play blues and rock in my trio.

Here is the guitar, and the rig.

Let us know how you like the Seth's. I just ordered a pair for my chambered les paul standard. Can't wait to try them out. I found the burstbucker pros a little too "modern" sounding, if you know what I mean. I thought the "airiness" of the guitar and the traditional PAF nature of the Seth's would be an interesting pairing.

Re: Antiquities VS Seth Lovers for my Gibson ES-333

I have not used the Seths, but I have never gone wrong with the Ants.

I have not used the Seths, but I have never gone wrong with the Ants.

They're both high-quality PU's; the thing some of us don't care for with Ant's is the aged magnets. A2's don't have much treble or output when they're fully-charged, and when they're aged they have noticeably less of both (especially less bite in a warm-toned guitar).

Re: Antiquities VS Seth Lovers for my Gibson ES-333

I actually ordered the antiquity set.

I wire my guitars with 50s wiring exclusively because of my heavy use of the tone knob.

I have two 335 copies, one with an UOA5 modded Ant set and the other with a STOCK Seth set.

I like both, but I prefer the Seth.

HTH,

I saw your posts on another forum regarding the ant vs 59 vs Seth battle. They helped my decision.

I chose the antiquities because I got a really good deal on them and would be able to sell them without much loss if need be.

Let's see how it goes. If I don't love them I'll give the Seth's a try. Should be here in 2 or 3 days.

What was the final verdict astrozommbie?

I agree that the stock pickups just aren't right. I was thinking of a set of the 59s with the ability for a coil split. I'd have to put some push pulls into it though.
