Antiquity humbuckers and magnets

I have two questions. First, would you consider the antiquity humbuckers with a 335 (w/ebony fingerboard) for classic rock and blooze? I am using a tweed deluxe style amp so there isnt much headroom. Not that im looking for headroom. I have picked the antiquity sound over the current pups I have which are 57 classic gibson (which I find a bit thick in the mids with a metalic overtone) on internet sound samples. The guitar is very even toned and a bit robust sounding acoustically. I am looking for an open woody sound with a little snap but no ice pick.

Second, I keep reading about switching ants to full streangth magnets, but I cant seem to find out where they are sold. Is there a disadvantage to the aged magnets verses new ones?

I got my pair of Ants just two weeks ago and put it in a Hamer just to check them. The Bridge had the degaussed mag for 3 day than i changed to a full charged A2. The deg. A2 sounds more airy and with some presence, the full A2 made it rounder and fuller. I prefer the full A2, too.
But if you have covers on your pup its a bit of work, there are different places like wymore guitars online shop where you can buy full charged magnets. There's a tutorial for swapping magnets on pups with covers at projectguitar.com

Thanks for the resource. Is it possible to buy a Seth Lover magnet from Seymour or a third party? I am not looking for a lot of output from the pup as I am used to rather underwound Strat pups, but it would be nice to have a Seth magnet to put in if necessary.

I am likely going to keep the covers on as I think 335s look better with them. Also, it is a 1988 and the rest of the hardwear is very worn looking, and the ant would fit right in.

A third question is: is it common to get an ant humbucker that was signed by Seymour himself?

I think the Seth Lover magnet is a full strength A2 just like any other Duncan A2. Just as an FYI, the magnets we sell are from the same manufacturer that supplies SD.

All Antiquity Humbuckers have Seymours sig on them as do Seths.

Yes, don't go for a new Seth Lover, a fully-charged A2 is like $4 at Wymore's link.

try the degaussed mag first before ya switch anything, you may fall in love. if im using a pair of ants, i prefer the degaussed magnets in gibson style instruments. a friend of mine has a '57 ri lp with ants (stock degaussed mag) and it is one of the best sounding guitars ive ever heard.

Good to hear someone likes the aged magnets. I have only heard of one bad sounding SD set, so I am going to trust that he got the ant right.

Next I have to build up the courage to redo the pots and pups on a 335. It may take all day!

Or you could fully charge the existing magnet.

Might I ask how you do this? I've degaussed magnets with an A8 before, with excellent results, as I've seen you recommend here on the forum. But recharging them I've not had any luck with, based on the refrigerator test (actually a toolbox in my case).

Use two neodymium disk mags facing each other in a vise -- north facing south. Run the magnet between them, but make sure you know the polarity of the magnet before. If the magnet comes out weaker than ever, you ran it through the wrong way -- just run it through the right way and all will be well.

I'm with jeremy. Give them a try first. I have a set in my 58 Reissue Les Paul. Everyone that has heard it have loved it.

If you want full strength, just buy some Seths and then age the hardware a bit yourself. It's not too hard to do. Before you install them rub them down with a light coat of vinegar. Let them sit for a few days. Wipe them off. You're done.

Im with these guys...try them stock first, I was dead set on swapping the magnets in mine but never did it as they sounds KILLER in my R8 as is!
