Antiquity humbuckers can't do OOP?

Hi.

I dropped off my guitars at my cousin's this morning, to be worked on by a friend/guitartech.

I asked him to install a push-pull pot in my 335 copy so I could get an out-of-phase sound with the Antiquity pups. He called me back this afternoon and told me it couldn't be done. He said that after wiring it properly, and upon engaging the switch the pickups would go dead.

Is that to be expected? Can it not be done?

Funny, because I had just wired a pair of 59's in my SG by myself and got the OOP to work without a problem. I asked the guy to replace the 59N with a Seth Lover (2-wire bridge model) in the same guitar, and the OOP still worked.

So how come I couldn't do the same mod with the pair of Antiquitys?

You can only do phase reversal wiring with a switch if the pickup has four conductors. Antiquities are single conductor (with braided shield). I suspect that in your SG the phase reversal switch is operating on a 4-conductor '59, i.e. putting it in and out of phase with the single-conductor Seth - You only have to reverse the phase on one pickup to get them out of phase.

To get your Antiquities out of phase when both pickups are on you can do the Peter Green mod. You have to remove the cover from one pickup, take the magnet out and flip it over, then put everything back together. But you won't be able to control it with a switch.

I'm sure 4-conductor Antiquities are available as a special order if you want them.

Thank you for the info, sir. I ws beginning to think the tech just forgot to do the x wiring on the push-pull pot, as that was the only reason I could think of why the pups would go dead.

Then again, both the Seth and 59B are single conductor... so I don't know what gives... Oh well, I will content myself with the stock Antiquity.

A single conductor pickup can be converted to a 4 (or a 3 actually) conductor... but I never did that so I won't further comment on that...
