Antiquity Strat pickups

How's it going. I'm wondering if somebody can give me some pickup advice. I'm thinking of putting together a project Strat, I've done one before with reasonable results, but now I have more experience and I think I can do a much better job. Anyway, I've heard good things about the Antiquity Strat pickups but what I'd like to know is this: Is it a bad idea to mix and match the "Texas Hot" pickups with the surf version? Like having, say, the Texas in the bridge and middle position and the surf in the neck position. Would this work okay, or would it sound like ****? If it would be a bad idea can somebody tell me why? Thanks...

Re: Antiquity Strat pickups

I would stay with the same models if you are looking for quack.

If you want clean the surfer model is the way to go.

If you mean the Texas one's are the way to go.

Those sets are calibrated nicely and sound good just as they are.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Re: Antiquity Strat pickups

I don't see why you couldn't. As always, it's down to personal taste. The Surfers will sparkle a chime more, and you'll get a little more grunt from the Texas hots. My guitar doesn't have Antiquities, bit I have a mix of A2 and A5 magnets in it, and it sounds superb.

Mix and match all you want...in fact one of the favorite forum sets is a pair of Surfers in the neck and middle and a Texas hot (sometimes a Texas Hot Custom) in the bridge or a Pair of SSL-1's in the beck and middle and a Twangbanger in the bridge...guys mix and match all the time.

I have a Twangbanger/SSL-1/SSL-1 setup in mine.

Re: Antiquity Strat pickups

Thanks for the advice folks. I might just go with the Texas bridge/Surf middle + neck combo. I love the sound of a clean Strat, but I like a Strat that rocks too. And I like those "quack" tones. I just love it all! One guitar is just never enough to do everything I suppose.

Re: Antiquity Strat pickups

Talk to Lewguitar - that guy knows his stuff. He mixes up his sets to get a ballsier sound in the bridge...

EDIT: gah - sorry, guess that was mentioned already.

Actually my favorite is a Twangbanger/Surfer/Surfer and the bridge/middle tones are still great!

Re: Antiquity Strat pickups

Its all cool... Maybe I'll give Lewguitar a shout, see what he thinks.

hey, if it feels good do it. if you're lookin for a little more quack in the neck and middle, but want something a little more spicy in the bridge, try 'em out. sounds like a cool combination. you might want to think about a RWRP for the middle to eliminate some noise. heck, in that MIJ Strat of mine I've mixed so many different pickups in that axe I can't even count how many, but now with the SSL-1/APS/SSL-4 trio and I'm pretty satisfied with that.....finally. :smack:

Re: Antiquity Strat pickups

Dang, 10.6 seems awful hot! :boggled:

How does the bridge pickup sound when combined with the middle?

the Texas Hot mixes in really well with the middle pup, and with a tone-blender pot it also mixes very nicely with the neck s.c. the SSL-4 in my Strat is a little over 13k down in the bridge! I can turn the tone pot all the way down and it still spews out all kinds of treble. also with a tone-blender pot in that axe, it's a great pickup to blend with the neck pup to balance out the sound.
using a tone-blender pot in place of one of your tone-pots in your Strat can give your guitar that much more versatility if you're looking for such.

Edited my original post.

It is 10.16, still HOT, can get some good breakup when using bridge alone.

Sounds good to me when mixed, MUST cut the treble about 1/3 when using bridge alone.

Re: Antiquity Strat pickups

Quack is generally enhanced when pickups sound similar. I'm a bit of a quackaholic so the matched neck/middle and sliggghtly hotter bridge in my strat (holy grail lace sensors) are making me very happy.

Great pickups, by the way, if the hum annoys you, and I say that as someone who loves single coil sound enough to ignore the hum..

Thats the thing, I dont wanna mess up the quack too much. A little hum doesnt bother me that much. If its good enough for Hendrix, Clapton (in the earlier days), and SRV then its good enough for me.
