Antiquity Surfers

Hey,

So I'm looking at the Antiquity Surfers for my '95 American Standard.
All the reviews I've read here are great.
I'm looking for the classic quack, bluesy, bar-room tone, these would seem to fit the bill.

But want some balls in the bridge position!!!!

Will the Surfer Custom bridge be able to cover a heavier 70's- 80's rock tone?
Or does it leave you wanting like many Strat bridge pups?
Antiquity Texas Hot maybe? Or something else?

Also, I read on one of the threads that if you go with the RW/RP middle, you wouldn't be getting 5 distinct tones, but rather 3 tones with 2 hum canceling positions.

Thanks,

Re: Antiquity Surfers

you might want to consider the Twangbanger for the bridge. i have one. it is definitely not your typical strat bridge sound. i'll let you do your own research, but when i heard it for the first time, i understood all the descriptions and agreed. it does what everyone says.

it is perfect for Rock music in general, but can twang all you can stand. i seriously doubt you'll be disappointed.

Re: Antiquity Surfers

When I think about heavy rock guitar of the 70's/80's, I picture it coming from full size humbucking pickups - even if they're in a Strat. If we're picturing the same tones (EVH, Rhoads, etc.) those are humbucker tones not Strat single coil tones. So as much as I like the Antiquity Strat pickups for Hendrix, SRV, etc., I wouldn't recommend them for Heavy Metal or the stereotypical 70's/80's rock tones that were generated with a humbucking pickup through a loud Marshall amp.

Rock what? Rock that has originally been played on humbuckers, or super distortions?

The choice between Ant1 (surfers) and Ant2 (texas hot) is as much dependent on the guitar as taste.

Both Ant sets can also be head with a heavier bridge pickup ("Custom bridge").

Thanks,

It's the same 5 sounds (well almost according to some) but two are now without hum.

Re: Antiquity Surfers

Any of the hot singles like the Custom Surfer bridge, SSL-5, Twangbanger, etc are all still single coils, just hotter single coils...when I think 70's/80's rock I don't think overwound single coil...I think PAF.

Maybe 2 Surfers and a Lil 59 or even a Hot Rails is a better bet for you.

Re: Antiquity Surfers

Ant II Surfers? Yes, yes, yes, yes,

YEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!

For ballsier bridge pickup, consider Twangbanger, Pearly Gates Plus. Be aware that mixing Ant 1 and Ant II pickups can create winding/polarity issues. My solution is to have the RP/RW pickup as the neck position. This way, the pickup set as a whole works out correctly.

Re: Antiquity Surfers

I really enjoy the Antiquity Surfer Custom bridge in my start but it sounds like you are looking for something with a little extra 'oomph'. I think the SSL-5 would be a great choice to pair with the surfer middle & neck. Twangbanger is also a great choice as others have mentioned.

Re: Antiquity Surfers

I love the surfer set in my Am Dlx strat, but if I were looking for something to handle the harder rock, I'd go with some flavor of humbucker.
Either rout out the body if necessary, or get one of the mini buckers
Jb Jr. Hotrails, Lil59.
I have no experience with the Twangbanger, or the SSL5 so I can't comment on how they handle 80's rock.

Re: Antiquity Surfers

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just put them in, the full set.
RWRP middle, Custom Bridge.

Awesome.

The only thing I'm wanting is more time to play!!!!

I'm playing through a '68 Super Reverb with a tube screamer, and an 80's Marshall JCM 800 2210, on the clean channel, with a PlimSoul.
They sound great in either set up!!!!!!!!
All the spank and quack you could ever want in postions 2 through 5.
The custom bridge has a wonderful single coil nastiness to it.

Thanks to all for the input!!!!!!!!

Re: Antiquity Surfers

Yep, I think it been officially outlawed to dislike surfers....the Ant Vigilante Squad comes to your house and does nasty things to you. As you know, nobody expects the Ant Vigilante Squad. Their main weapon is surprise, surprise and fear...their two weapons are........
