Any Broadcaster User's Here?

Re: Any Broadcaster User's Here?

couple of months and i didn't....the tech did....lol. All i can say is that the combo of the Broadcaster, the Wilkinson bridge and the RS electronics turned my mexi tele from a very nice inexepensive little guitar to a tone monster that the tech called one of the bestr sounding teles he had ever heard.....nuff said.

Re: Any Broadcaster User's Here?

I've had one a couple of years.

I use Fender specs for the height - 4/32" bass side, 3/32" treble side. You could also use their "vintage" specs, which are 1/64" higher.

Re: Any Broadcaster User's Here?

That pu used to be my first go-to when I replaced USA RI stuff, a lot of which was pretty microphonic. The Broadcaster has more mids, less icepick, good output. I have a few from the late 80's around and adjust them pretty high and then back them off to balance with the neck pu...

Re: Any Broadcaster User's Here?

I've had mine for a couple of years now and love it. It's in a MIM Tele that's been modded a bit, 4 way switch/fully shielded/all new cts pots and wiring/Orange Drop/vintage fender 3 saddle(steel) bridge and paired to a Fralin Blues Special neck. My height is almost exactly like Curly's. This pup is a smoker when under gain and mixed with the neck. Clean, she is bright and clear but not icepicky.

BTW, welcome to the forum!

Re: Any Broadcaster User's Here?

i made a 11k/6.5k tapped broadcaster pup a ugd that i love. its about 5/64" from the strings all the way across, maybe a touch lower on the bass side

Re: Any Broadcaster User's Here?

I have an 8.2K broadcaster that I got as a Floor Shop Custom with A2 polepieces. GREAT pup. I keep it pretty high especially since it's A2. I don't have it with me right now to measure though. It's in a 2000 or 2001 Ash American Series tele.

So how well does the Fralin work with the Broadcaster: are they RWRP with respect to each other so that the parallel and series linkages on your 4 way switch are humcancelling?

When mixing and matching pickups from different vendors sometimes I need to swap the black and white wires, which can create problems if there is any leakage between the coil and the pole pieces.

BTW in looking through old threads here I see that Lew asked if anyone really liked the "wide humbucker" sound of the tele 4-way series linkage. I find it to be very useful although it can be a bit on the dark side. When hum is a real problem at those BARS FROM HELL I've played a whole gig just alternating between the series and parallel linkages of the bridge and neck pickups. Just wondering what your thoughts are on the series linkage...

Re: Any Broadcaster User's Here?

If you look at the specs of a Fralin Blues Special Bridge it was voiced just like an original Broadcaster so it blends beautifully. Mine is also wound to 8.2k and I asked MJ about it at UGD and she figured that may have possibly been a CS job. I don't believe that it is hum canceling in 2 and 4 but it's really hard to tell as she's a quiet as a mouse with being fully shielded. I also like the #4 pos, but it can be a bit dark depending on the amp. It can really scream though...in a good way!

The series linkage can get pretty noisy when not humcancelling... if you get a chance maybe you can try plugging your guitar in near a TV or computer monitor with a CRT. Stew Mac does have a chart with the polarities of many pickup makers so I think I could figure it out from that. It'd be worth it to me to special order a Fralin neck pickup that would be humcancelling when used with a particular bridge pickup.

Thanks!

Re: Any Broadcaster User's Here?

Monitors and TV's make it buzz something awful. But take two steps back it clears right up. With the shielding job that I did, I just don't find it to be a problem in 99% of situations.

That 99% figure does not include those BARS FROM HELL with their dimmer switches and neon lights wired up by an electrician from the 19th century. :chairfall:

You are going to have noise problems at places like that even with humbuckers! :(

It sounds like you did a good shielding job... did you use copper foil tape or conductive paint?

Re: Any Broadcaster User's Here?

LOL, you are probably right about the bars! I used heavy aluminum foil on the tele. It's cheap and effective, but you have make sure to overlap seams for continuity if you don't use a single large piece. I'm still amazed at how quiet it is.
