since i am able to start back playing again i need a new amp. for now i am having to go wit lower budget stuff so what is out there that is decent for around $400. i have been looking at the newer vox modeler 1x12 combo. i need something with good cleans and preferable a decent distortion. right now i can not afford to buy any dirt pedals. as i am having to buy everything over again.

oh man, what happened to all your awesome gear!?

you should totally hit up ebay and craigslist man. you'll be happier i think.

also guitar center in hoover has a dedicated used section now with some interesting deals.

Re: any decent amps for around $400?

i had some bills come up plus had to help my gf get a new car after her motor blew up. i used to go into the guitar center there sometimes. but they never seemed to have anything. or wanted too much for it.

Re: any decent amps for around $400?

sorry to hear all that bro. hope you find guitar happiness again!

fi what its worth i got my Kustom coupe for 450 at Bailey Bros in birmingham cuz they lost the footswitch. normally the amp would go for twice that. even better, they ordered me the footswitch for free....yeah it makes no sense but whatev

guess my point is i hope you luck out and find something that calls to you AND comes cheap

i think the new vox would be a great choice! tons of models and effects for under $300 IIRC.

sorry to hear ... I am leary about computer modelers holding their value...also I think you would have more fun with a louder amp for your metal style to compete with loud drums etc, so I recommend the 5150 combo, I have seen them go for around $500 used and they hold their value...

You can still get a brand new AVT50 for $500 at Instrument Pro. They sound remarkably close to the all-tube Marshalls. Nice and crunchy. Genuine Marshall tone.

I agree.

you'll be much happier with a tube amp if you can find one in your price range. 5150 combos are loud and sound pretty good stock and amazing with a few mods.

Re: any decent amps for around $400?

But some of these tube amps have no distortion on them. Like some of the Fender amps. Does the Peavey Classic have a Gain control on it?

Re: any decent amps for around $400?

i would not mind getting a good single channel amp for cleans and just using pedals. which is what i plan on doing later on. i found it is easier for me to do that than just get a 2 channel amp since i play so many different types of music. i have went to playing bluesy stuff mainly. but play metal sometimes when i jam with my buddies. i am just looking for something to get me by for awhile. i do not have much to spend and i have to get a guitar as well.

Yes it does. Depending on how hot your pups are, you may need a dirtbox for some of the more extreme metal styles.

d00dz, the brutha already said he doesn't have the bones to go the route you suggest.

I like the Vox amps. They could get serve you well until you can get what you really want.

The Peavey Bandit is a decent mulitichannel SS amp.

Sure, it'd be great if you could find a Classic 30 on the cheap, but until then find something you can live with.

Re: any decent amps for around $400?

a buddy of mine sold a classic 50 4x10 a few weeks ago with out telling me. i would have grabbed it in a heartbeat. it had been retubed and he had replaced the speakers. he let it go for $300.

Re: any decent amps for around $400?

look for a used or even new old stock Crate Palomino V30, or V32
The V30 and V32 are the same amp, just different cosmetics.
Look for USA made ones if you can, but if you find ones that are not, they're still good.

These combos rock -- 2 channels, and both sound good.
Clean channel is every bit as good as a Peavey classic 30, while the dirt channel is much better than the peavey's.
the dirt channel is very marshally, and has a good range of gain.

I got one a few months ago for a grab and go amp, where I can play without pedals if i wanted to. it fits the bill nicely.

look for clips on youtube and you can read the reviews on them, even on thegearpage these have gotten rave reviews.

hope this helps.
