Any experience tweaking a Seth neck pickup?

I have a Seth Lover set in an SG and can't justify replacing either one because they do so many things so well. Not to mention the openness and touch sensitivity of them is just fantastic. My only beef is lack of clarity in the neck position when soloing in higher gain situations. Anybody have experience using different magnets in these?

You might be able to fiddle with the polepieces to create clarity. If that doesn't work an A3 magnet will reduce bass and give a slight boost in treble.

Dont mean to thread-jack but i just purchased an MJ wound Seth Lover the other day. I want to put it in my les paul, which i use mostly for higher gain applications. Will i have any major issues with microphonic feedback since it is unpotted?

Re: Any experience tweaking a Seth neck pickup?

You can put AlNiCo3 magnet in it. I did it, and it's somehow magical to me. Another nice option is AlNiCo 4.

AlNiCo 8 is a total overkill, AlNiCo 5 is all about boominess. Some people will recommend UOA5, but I didn;t ike it.

Microphonic feedback isn't a big issue with Seths, unless you are playing with tons of gain, with tube amp over 50W in a medium room. Otherwise you should be good. The feedback of Seths is very musical and controllable, and might come in handy if you leanr to use it properly.

EDIT: Found my old thread about magnet swapping in Seths, hope you find there what you are looking for :)

I've already exhausted the pole piece adjustment approach. An A3 or 4 is what seemed like logical solutions. My only concern is loosing the open sweet sound of the pickup.....

Thanks majewsy! I have an assortment of magnet coming for experimentation. I hesitate to tinker with my Seths b/c they are so good as is, hence my thread here.

....and YES the feedback from Seths is VERY musical indeed. I use mine in an SG, often under high gain through a hot rodded plexi + various overdrives. No problems with unwanted feedback.

Re: Any experience tweaking a Seth neck pickup?

I've never swapped magnets in my Seth's (one of the few pickups I can say that about). Being a blues/classic rock player, I like texture & sag of A2's, but for you, that translates to a little less clarity (A2's have a lot of midrange, a reduced high-end, and a loose low-end). An UOA5 is pretty similar to an A2, but with a little more treble and a little less mids. You're probably wanting more of a change than that. An A4 (flat EQ) or A3 (lots of mids with a bright but rounded high-end) would be the first to try. A regular A5 might work too, but you could get more bass than you want.

Maybe even 1 meg pots will help...and it will be cheap.

Re: Any experience tweaking a Seth neck pickup?

Try removing the covers. I have three Seth sets and I've removed the covers from every one.

Thanks Blueman. An A3 was my initial thought.....

I've heard that wakes them up a bit, yes? Seth's without the cover though.......it just feels wrong to talk about

Re: Any experience tweaking a Seth neck pickup?

I like uncovered A3 Seths as well. They're insane. More clarity and spank but still retains the sweetness.
