Re: Any fans of the Classic Lead 80 in here?
I have MC90s, Ive had 80s
I made this post because a lot of people like the CL80/V30 mix. I am one of them. They DO add bass response.
Problem? When you play alone, or seek a smooth tone when recording - you will love them. They even out the harshness of V30s. PROBLEM IS THINKING LIKE AN AT HOME ALONE PLAYER.
When I hear back live takes or EQ'd takes of myself with V30s and a brit style amp - the tone is THE sound. I have this suspicion that CL80s are a tad sterile.
My last CL80 or MC90 experience was when I replaced an EV12L with a MC90. That felt really brown, and it took the DB's down a notch so I wasn't so bloody loud. The MC90 felt very brown when compared to the EV12L. Otherwise I am finding it might be better to have ALL V30s or G12H/V30s mixes.
I find G12H's kinda crunchy, but like I said - in a band element, loud and live - that might be the ticket. When you play with a great bass player, bass response seems to matter much less than sweet mids and upper mids.
So, I have gathered others have found CL80s sterile as well.
