Any fans of the Classic Lead 80 in here?

Re: Any fans of the Classic Lead 80 in here?

I dig 'em. My two favorite cabs are loaded with 'em.

For my purposes, I prefer a speaker that lets the inherent sound of the amp come through. I find it to have the neutral sound of the EVM without being too flat. They're also a lot cheaper and lighter weight than the EVMs. :p

I have a Mesa Black Shadow C-90, which is a tweaked classic lead. In my 1x12" open back cab I'm not quite sure if I like it. The cleans are very nice but distortion wise it's sounds quite flat and boring. Have to try it out in a sealed cab and compare it with other speakers to pass a final judgement.

I too have the Black Shadow C-90's in a 2x12 3/4 closed cab. I don't know if it's the cab construction or the speakers but it's very dark sounding. It's kind of a modern sound, smooth midrange and not really crunchy or woody. However they do sound much better than Vintage 30's to my ears.

Re: Any fans of the Classic Lead 80 in here?

I have MC90s, Ive had 80s

I made this post because a lot of people like the CL80/V30 mix. I am one of them. They DO add bass response.

Problem? When you play alone, or seek a smooth tone when recording - you will love them. They even out the harshness of V30s. PROBLEM IS THINKING LIKE AN AT HOME ALONE PLAYER.

When I hear back live takes or EQ'd takes of myself with V30s and a brit style amp - the tone is THE sound. I have this suspicion that CL80s are a tad sterile.

My last CL80 or MC90 experience was when I replaced an EV12L with a MC90. That felt really brown, and it took the DB's down a notch so I wasn't so bloody loud. The MC90 felt very brown when compared to the EV12L. Otherwise I am finding it might be better to have ALL V30s or G12H/V30s mixes.

I find G12H's kinda crunchy, but like I said - in a band element, loud and live - that might be the ticket. When you play with a great bass player, bass response seems to matter much less than sweet mids and upper mids.

So, I have gathered others have found CL80s sterile as well.

damn glad i saw this thread i was gonna get some of these but not now

Re: Any fans of the Classic Lead 80 in here?

Classic Lead 80s rock... plain and simple. I've used my Bogner 4x12'' w/ CL80s/V30s and I have no problem being heard through the band. It cuts like nobody's business (admittedly enough, V30s do cut more because CL80s seem darker).

One of these days I'll have to put the cabinet back to all V30s to compare, but the V30/CL80 mix does work very well and I think I'd miss that tight lowend on the clean channel (it sucks when that lowend breaks up on you at high volumes).

Re: Any fans of the Classic Lead 80 in here?

I have a 2x12 with a CL90 and An EVM12L and it is my favorite all on its own. I also have a few others

2x12 w/CL80's : too bright for me by itself but works well in conjuntion with the EV/90 cab (comparatively it is not as loud so the highs just sweeten the EV/CL90 cab)

2x12 w/V30's : Raunchy and fun but again too bright or brittle for me but it is a closed back cab so that might be something I should mess with to tweak it.

2x12 2CL90's: this is my 2nd favorite cab nice and even sounding.

I only have 100watt heads so I'm sure thet plays into how i feel about these cabs as well...

Yep... some amps just can't handle V30s and CL80s. My Bogner is a pretty dark amp, so the V30s and CL80s really shine. I can't really see the combination working for a lot of different amps, but anything with a darker high gain voicing would definitely kick with them.

I am starting to think Mixes are for me

I am thinking CL80/V30 for my 2x12

and G12H30/ V30 or GB for my 4x12

Re: Any fans of the Classic Lead 80 in here?

are g12H-30's good for metal and taming harshness?

They CAN be good for metal ESP if you like Judas Priest and Black Sabbath. For newer metal it's debatable. The G12H really does have that hybrid of V30 and GB in it. They sound best loud. Some people argue they are spikey or less harsh than a V30 (which is very harsh). Most agree it is a balanced speaker with good bass response. Very few have said its overly bright.

These speakers need a LOT of break in to mellow out.

They are much more vintage sounding. Check out Scumbacks as well!

I'm trying to find something to mate with my 6505+ which is pretty bright (not really harsh just bright) with my T75s
