Any fix for a "clanky" sounding guitar?

I have a LP that when you hit the strings they just ring beautifully as you would expect. Then, I have another that was very stiff sounding when it was new and has seemed to break in a lot, but it still still sounds kinda clanky, esp when you hit the low e string hard. Now, the guitar sounds fine thru an amp, but accoustically, its dreadful. I dont know if this can just be the character of some guitars, or what.
What I mean by clanky... Well, gonna be hard to explain I suppose. The best 2 ways I can think to describe it, is: A) if you have a guitar with action too low and you hit a string hard and it hits a fret, it"ll kinda clank before it starts to ring. (Im not fretting out, ive looked and looked cuz this was my first thought). B) its also kinda like the stringier sound that a 25.5 scale guitar makes, verses a 24.5, only magnified. Kind that boing when you hit the string. As I said, the whole thing was very much like this when I got it and it seems to have broken in alot, but still does it much to my displeasure. Ive never really seen a guitar need broken in. The first one I got had alot of build flaws and was returned. Im kinda worried that this one too has something wrong as the co didnt want to rebuild for me as the run had stopped. But Ive hoped it would improve and its prolly past any warranty period.
A couple of details. The bridge and tailpiece are tone pros locking, so it not like a rattling bridge. And again, I repeat, it sounds fine thru an amp, but just unsettling to me to play.
Am I just stressing over nothing? Is this normal for some guitars? Thanks

My first recommendation would have been to check the bridge but since you seem to have cleared that. Maybe the saddle on the low E string itself? Anyways you could grab a quick recording of the sound you are referring to so we can get a better idea what you mean? Not sure I fully understand what you mean by clanky.

Have you checked the neck relief?

How old are the strings?

Re: Any fix for a "clanky" sounding guitar?

Are you sure the adjective isn't "clunky". That's how George Harrison described the Beatles first guitars.

Re: Any fix for a "clanky" sounding guitar?

clanky, clunky. its hard to say. this is my interpretation.

strings are daddario .10s. maybe 6 months old with about 4 hrs playtime

Take it over to Mikey next time you go to GC,he may be able to give it a once over.
Guy does phenominal work!

Re: Any fix for a "clanky" sounding guitar?

I've actually pulled off Tone Pro's bridges and put back the stock bridges on a couple guitars, just because I thought the TP bridges were too bright and created too much sustain. Just because they were more expensive didn't mean they sounded better.

I'm not sure if this is the problem, but it was for me. A perfect setup goes a long way to curing most guitar problems as well.

Re: Any fix for a "clanky" sounding guitar?

Why are you even bothering with that **** man? Just sell it and get another charvel :)

I am thinking you need a custom shop wayne charvel.

Hey, no disrespect intended bro but this describes what my guitars sound like to a T. I hate changing strings unless they have locking tuners.

BTW, I also dislike all the adjectives used to describe what a guitar sound like; velvety, mochachino, jangly, etc...

Re: Any fix for a "clanky" sounding guitar?

the Graphtech saddles I put on my strat fixed the clankiness it used to have.

The stock metal saddles were just not gelling with the acoustic properties of the body and neck. sounded harsh, unmusical and just aggravating.
the graphtech saddles made it sound smoother, with fuller low end, took out the harshnesss and allowed the strings to sound musical. Best upgrade that ever happened to my strat.

Re: Any fix for a "clanky" sounding guitar?

Sounds like a setup issue, possibly combined with being a bit O.C.D. about non-amplified buzzes and rattles on an electric guitar. I'd start by getting a setup and fret leveling and dressing.

Re: Any fix for a "clanky" sounding guitar?

"Clang, clang, clang" went the Gibson
"Ding, ding, ding" went the fret
"Zing, zing, zing" went the E string
But maybe it's not broken in yet

Ill see how the set up goes and maybe try this if it doesnt tame.
thanks? Do graphtech saddles on LPs deaden the tone any? Never played with graphtecs

yeah, will start with a setup. Guitar has been plekked

"Clang, clang, clang" went the Gibson
"Ding, ding, ding" went the fret
"Zing, zing, zing" went the E string

LOL!

Pigbacon, thats great!!!

Hey, there are many times the acoustic tone can be bad, and the guitar sound good. I'd echo the sentiments of other with regard to strings (maybe up a gauge) and setup.

it shouldn't. Generally you'll see wider dynamic range and fuller response. Might be a touch smoother, and will have a bit more clarity. Graphtech and dead do not really belong in the same sentence unless you're talking about bringing a guitar back from the dead.

I love graphtech products.

Yeah, its funny, cuz it sounds good thru an amp, so thats why I hadnt brought this up previously. AND, it has gotten MUCH better than it did when new. Ive never had to "break in" a guitar before.

Thanks again! Ill get the setup checked out and perhaps try some of these. Right now Im broke, so no upgrades for awhile.

Im gonna put in the Duncan distortion I have and will try running a diff size string. I always run .10s on my Lps. Cant decide whether a bigger or smaller guage would help
