Any good amp kits out there?

Re: Any good amp kits out there?

If you can deal without step-by-step instructions, can read a schematic and follow a layout, Weber's kits are an amazing value and will sound gorgeous just with the stock parts...

Agreed on the value of the Weber kits. I'm considering either a kit or assembling parts for a build myself. I struggle with a schematic sometimes, but between a schematic and a layout I could build a Weber kit without much problem. But I do have experience with kits and some repairs. At any rate, the Weber kit's appear to be the best value I have come across so far. There are, however, some kits that appear to include documentation that would be better for someone with no experience.

If it's a first build, and you have no or very little experience, and you cannot read a schematic, make sure that either the instructions are clear before you buy, or that there is a very good support forum. Check all these things out before you buy if you don't have the experience. It's better to start with an easy build to get your feet wet but not always practical from a financial or need point of view. What I would NOT do is learn to solder on the fly, while building an expensive kit. That is one thing you'd definitely want to have practiced before starting a kit. It would be a real ***** tracing back cold solder joints on a build with any amount of complexity. No offense intended to the OP if he is not new to soldering or electronics.

Why don't they include a step by step guide to assembling such projects? Just curious.

That's a good question. Maybe because someone didn't want to take the time to write them up? Maybe it's because some of the places will build the kit for an upcharge, and they want the money? Liability? I really have no idea but some seem to have better documentation than others.

Step-by-step instructions do take a lot of time and effort to put together and still some may not agree with the way they are done, and IMHO, aren't really needed. I'm not trying to be pedantic but if you have to be told/shown how to solder a terminal and a wire together, maybe you shouldn't think of building an amp in the first place and start with something simpler first to build up your confidence and experience. There are, of course, subtleties that you have to mind but they should be researched first anyways. If you're building a tube amp, there's a lot of things you have to understand first, not just know where to connect.

Weber does supply a layout which tells you pretty much where to connect everything, except the grounding pattern, which you have to research yourself.

If someone's just starting out, there's a lot of research and reading to be done before going headfirst in an amplifier. Some places, such as Tubedepot, do have step-by-step instructions on how to put their kits together and are available on their sites for free. If you're researching your first build, downloading a few and looking at how they do things is a good idea even if you don't intend on buying their kits...soldering is soldering and laying out wires is laying out wires.
