Any Hexophonic Midi & Electric Guitar Players Here That Solo ?

I asked this a long time ago here before developing a solo act and just got back into the forum after
5 years of being off of it .

There were not many midi musicians here then as I recall  ...... I hope there are more now :smokin:

I have been into quintets - quartets , trios , duets acts even my school marching band , and now have been
going it solo with my present set up now .

I began building a solo concept act 5 years ago improving my keyboard & guitar playing skills .

Hard to build a solo act around a trumpet and or harp cause when you sing you loose your groove :cool2: !

I lost my GNX4 DAW/Vocal & Guitar FX unit ( stolen ) about a year and a half ago - it was an important
link in my solo act . When I began this solo act concept 5 year ago my guitar chops were not up to speed
with my harp chops , so I just kept hammering at it & practicing and it's paid off .

While wood shedding over the years I found out more on modelers and loopers that were as good or
better than my Digitech GNX4 . When my GNX4 was stolen I was in the market again for a modeler / looper / DAW

I got a super sweet deal on a new T.C. Helicon Vocal Live 3 Extreme Edition about a month ago .

I'm hooking my Roland GR33 guitar synth module and controlling it with my Godin LGXSA ( love the SD's it's got )
that I use the T.C.Helicon's guitar FX with . It's really quite a system .

For a bigger guitar punch I plug into my old ( 25 years old and still pumpimg ) 60 watt tube Carvin in to this and for stereo guitar another amp
( my oldie but goodie 95 watt RMS SS Polytone Mini Brute V VI III P.A. ) and the synth sounds though a separate amp/P.A.

In big rooms with a solid sound system , I'm going direct into the house system with the T.C.Helicon VL3X sans any other gear .

I have a new small portable AC/12VDC P.A. that packs 150 RMS stereo @.05 THD . It's got a center channel 8" and
two super tweeters , it's great in small rooms , coffee house gigging and a personal stage monitor that has monitor
out to go into the house system seamlessly , and one more important thing ...

.......... - - BUSKING - - ............

Yep I am doing that too now .

This Stereo P.A.runs 10 hours on a single charge . I am probably going to return back to Hawaii to live and I love the side of the
Big Island Hawaii that is " Off The Grid " . This portable addresses that as well , it's amazing how well this P.A. projects on a
study & safe reliable speaker stand . It puts out my vocal & synth's sounds superbly , including the synth bass voices , unreal
little beast . Even the electric and acoustic guitar mixed with synth sounds and vocal , Blues harps comes out clean and pretty
damned loud too . I'll be using two USB power blocks to run the Roland GR33 & Vocal Live 3 X when busking and/or off the grid .

Instruments plugged to the P.A.system are :

  • Shure 520 D Green Bullet Harp mic ( into P.A. or T.C. VL3X )
  • Godin LGXSA electric guitar / midi / acoustic electric
  • 000 Nylon acoustic electric Lucero cocobolo single cutaway } new addition in my line up
  • 000 Resonator } old Antares - new in my line up
  • Dreadnought 6 steel string ,acoustic electric , my old standby Washburn D46SCE
  • Shure SM57
  • T.C.Helicon VL3X
  • Samson C01 cardiod 48V condenser to VL3X Looper < underrated little gem >
  • Roland GR33 guitar synth module

I'm using a ToneBone Bumper to select between harp mic - electric guitar - nylon - steel guitars into the guitar amp input
on the 60 watt tube Carvin / Polytone Mini Brute and or P.A./T.C. Helicon amp inputs .

I wasn't thinking ever at first on going solo , but my guitar playing kept improving and many of the musicians I was working
with over the years died , or wore out one way or another ( some just got too old , some substance self abuse ) but , now soloing it ,
I find it really cool and relaxing . It's brought out a deeper part of me into my act .

So , while on the subject of my query on midi guitar players , and modelers/loopers . Any one here in the forum delve into this new
horizon of performing and solo ?

This is a great musician who has gone the road of the :

Solo Road Warrior Musician Looper , < https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=145&v=rG6PjiiZ1t4 > ,

I really like his kicked back style , laid back and easy , his guitar sounds are not shabby - would you agree ?
His vocal FX are really cool too .

I have the next unit above his T.C.Helicon VL3 , mine is the VL3X , it has a USB Dongle port to record your
live performances to a flash drive so you can upload them to your computer or social media page .

This unit also automates your backing tracks your record on it . With that you don't have to step on any stomps to trigger vocal
or guitar FX while playing , that's trick !

:cool2: Simple -

¿ Are you a midi musician/guitarist/soloist ?

- If so .

¿ What is your set up/gear , what instruments do you play & where [type venue(s) ] ?

And anything else interesting .

The set ups I have seen for midi guitar are really interesting from off the grid rigs as well as small
venue gigging solo acts .

These two things I am interested in and do .

In other forums these topics are of interest and in others not .

After 5 years away from this forum I re posed the question to see
if the forum had a consensus of midi musicians since that first original query .

I'm learning about Bluetooth wireless midi controllers now in another forum .

Thanks for askin

Yeah, I do...but the solo stuff I do (which coincidently contains a lot of soloing) isn't quite like 'entertaining' or 'one-man band' type of stuff. I don't use sequencing, but I use an Echoplex Digitial Pro which is a really advanced looper. My setup is a Brian Moore Custom guitar with RMC piezos, into a Roland GI-10 and then either a Roland XV-5050 or M-GS64 synths to a mixer. It gets mixed with the regular guitar signal. The looper is in the mixer's aux send. It gets blended with the output of a Fractal AX8 and the 'acoustic' sound of the RMC piezos. All of this is controlled with a Behringer FCB1010 midi foot controller.

The types of places I play are strange...I am more apt to play at the aquarium or museum than an venue that is expecting popular tunes. My music is improvised ambient stuff.

Hip Mincer :

I do museums to and coffee houses . The audiences I find in those kinds of venues are really much more receptive to a solo performer than a night club/bar .
Busking has become a fun thing to do .

So - - elaborate - on the " strange " venues you play for please . And the Echoplex looper , how is it different/advanced ?
Do you do a Frippertronics thing :headbang: ?

RMC's are cool , the " BodyRez " presets on my T.C. Helicon VL3X really made the piezos sound better than ever on my LGXSA - got the - Quack Out -

Nice set up you have my fellow musician/looper , really an awesome rig you have put together :14: .

Who do you listen to that loops ?

I have followed loopers since Les Paul showed the very first one I ever saw he designed that mounted on your guitar like your GI10 .
I have searched out many since then , my first looper a [ Digitech GNX4 DAW ] many moons past really was cool while I had it .

Now that I'm looping with this new VL3X set up I'm thinking on a Ableton type sequencer to launch and mash my own midi creations .

My first sequencer was a little tiny Yamaha QY10 - I learned a lot about midi from that little humble thing . Just saw a midi controller app for a
touch screen computer/laptop/ipad/ipone by MIDIDESIGN that is totally awesome to control my T.C.Helicon VL3X and or Roland GR33 guitar synth
module via Bluetooth , it is unreal .

The idea of also controlling and trigger at will different visual graphics - digital videos w/audio - live utilizing my present rig for solo shows is really working
over time in my minds eyes to realize . I'm not far from it , I just need to learn more about midi's awesome power :rocket: .

The Digitech GNX4 while having the power as DAW had no midi time clock sync - absurd :smack:- you could not do what Ableton does with out midi time code sync
, any ways - - that's what's up in my world of the digital/analog mash up scene for this dude .

Thanks for responding .

Re: Any Hexophonic Midi & Electric Guitar Players Here That Solo ?

Well, the Echoplex can manipulate a loop after the fact, or while you are doing it. Like, it is essentially designed to compose with loops in real time, vs recording backing tracks and soloing over it. For instance you can take a non-ryhthmic loop, and punch a rhythm on top of it that is just a section of the original loop while playing on top. You can redefine start/end points. You can take a 7 bar measure and have measures 5 & 6 play in reverse, or cut 2 measures out. And this is just the beginning.

I got into looping by listening to Fripp & Eno, and playing with tape decks, so yeah, I love doing that, too. I've played lots of art shows, festivals, yoga classes, and galleries. I have done busking, but what I do is sort of slow and it isn't quite apparent where all the sound is coming from- it is hard to tell where live playing ends and looping starts- it isn't that apparent. Think of it as a soundtrack to seeing large fish swim...it takes a certain kind of attention, (or none at all)- I guess that really is the definition of ambient music.
I did get an NEA grant for a 50 CD/50 hour project, where I made only 1 copy of each recording and sold it...so once it was gone, it was gone.

Hip unit the Echoplex , what model do you have ?

Thanks

Re: Any Hexophonic Midi & Electric Guitar Players Here That Solo ?

It is an Oberheim Echoplex Digital Pro, with the last firmware they made (Loop V, I think).
