Any love for Epiphone Wildkat?

Re: Any love for Epiphone Wildkat?

Why did I buy it.... P-90's, semi hollow, bigsby, body style and shape (it hefts well) and Rockabilly!

They are great guitars... never understood why they never caught on.

Re: Any love for Epiphone Wildkat?

Aside from an awesome affordable combination of chrome P90s, semi-hollow, LP-like shape, Bigsby....... it's just awesome! The trans-black is the one I'd get

Re: Any love for Epiphone Wildkat?

A local band in the city I just recently moved out of has a guitarist that uses a yellow one of those, and though I may not be an Epi or Gibby fan, I gotta say, it's got some mean P-90 crunch to it. Definitely a guitar worth the $300-$400 they ask for.

Re: Any love for Epiphone Wildkat?

I dig it, if I had to buy a new guitar that would be it.

Re: Any love for Epiphone Wildkat?

I had the wildkat custom shop special edition model. It had the true bigsby ( not the epi copy), gibson pickups, a one piece solid maple top, all the fixings.

Was it a great guitar : yes. Did I like it : no. It just didn't work for me, and I find that it doesn't for a lot of people.

The only way for you to know if you would like it is to play it.

Re: Any love for Epiphone Wildkat?

Without a bigsby, I would like it.

Re: Any love for Epiphone Wildkat?

I've got the Alleykat. It's similar in shape and construction, but it has a stop bar/TOM bridge system.

I like it because of the neck shape, nice frets, ebony fingerboard, and the fact that I was able to mount a Fishman Powerbridge system on it.

It makes for a great jazz, blues, and country guitar, it's light, and because of the LP shape, it's very familiar to me. I have mine set up with a SM-1n/PG+ combo.

Mine's trans black, BTW.

Re: Any love for Epiphone Wildkat?

I'm asking 'bout this guitar 'cause I've just got one to fix. The P90s sit a mile long from the strings, so it's got a general dull sound, specially the neck p'up which is Mud City and suburbs! And almost no output level, even when the p'ups read 8.08k and 8.84k.

Maybe the wiring is at fault here? I can't find anything really WRONG with it, it just doesn't deliver what it should.

Also I think the bridge p'up physical location is... off. I mean, it sits abot half a centimeter farther away from the bridge than a regular HB measured in another guitar with the same scale. Is it due to the P90? I don't recall seeing anything like this in a regular Gibson SG or LP with P90s.

Or I'm just a cynical, grumpy old man?

Any ideas?

Lt. Kojak--That pickup problem is pretty common with P90's, the best bet is to make wooden or plastic spacers to raise the pickups.

The last store I did repairs for had an Alley Kat for a day or two, at least I got to play it a couple times before they sold it, nice for an Epi.

Re: Any love for Epiphone Wildkat?

On my PRS Soapbar, I had to put 2 or 3 foam stickies on the bottom of the pickups so that I could raise them up to where I wanted.

Re: Any love for Epiphone Wildkat?

i got a dot 6 semi. i like but it doesnt suit my style. but for al intisive purposes. that one has to be good. really good for the price.

Re: Any love for Epiphone Wildkat?

That sounds great! Nice playing! Is that you in the vid? I had no idea the Wildkat was that wonderfully small!

Thanks man, it's me indeed. It's my number one guitar now, bought it secondhand because I loved the vibe it has. I've never played a guitar with this amount of sustain before, and I'm a salesman in a pretty big guitarstore :p
The neck P90 is real fat warm and very jazzy. The bridge P90 sounds mean and Gretschy. The middle position is my favourite.

It's not such a big guitar, just a little bigger than a Les Paul. I attached a little foto so you could compare it to my Flying V and Jazz Bass.

Re: Any love for Epiphone Wildkat?

Mine is white with gold hardware. It sounds and plays awesome. Normally, I really dislike gold hardware but for this one, I'll deal with it.

I don't know what the deal is with a custom shop logo as Epi does not have a custom shop. Maybe they just cherry pick the better ones and slap a logo on it?
