Any Love for the Fender Super Sonic 112?

After I've turned fifty years old and got 'bout a grand to pour into a new tube amp, I've been having trouble deciding what to get.

I'm looking for a 30-50 Watt 112-210 combo with two or three channels. I like the classic Fender clean sound and the Dumble OD sound.

Today I saw on the Fender site Super Sonic 112 combo and the samples were enticing...

Who's using it? Any opinion 'bout it? Is it roadworthy or fragile like the Hot Rods?

Inquiring minds would like to know! :)

Fantastic overdrive & Bassman channels. The Vibrolux channel stinks in my opinion. It's too thin and jangly to do anything with. Unfortunately it's cheaply made. It lacks low end balls which is a disappointment because the overdrive is fantastic. A new speaker might help with that. In fact a speaker change might help with the Vibrolux channel. In any case I'm convinced that amp needs a speaker upgrade.

I cannot tell you how roadworthy it is but judging from how cheap it's made I wouldn't put too much stock into it. The back is made of cardboard. There are a zillion tubes in it. It's heavy. It's hard to dial in the volume becuase the volume is tapered backwards.

The Hot Rods are road worthy. The one I recommend is the western style Hot Rod Deluxe with Eminence speakers. It's inspring to play.

Not sure why you'd say it needs a speaker upgrade, it comes wiht a Vintage 30 and there is nothing wrong with that!

The Super Sonic is IMO the best new Fender amp in years...good cleans, good crunch, easy to use, looks cool, won't break the bank and like I said above already has a quality speaker in it...whats not to like??

Is it solid...as solid as any PCB amp out there I guess...

I'd be willing to bet you'd do quite well with it.

i've seen jeff beck with one on stage a few times, not the 112 though. I had been really interested in them and played one at a store, loved it. TGWIF pretty much laid it all out with his description: "good cleans, good crunch, easy to use, looks cool"

a good all around amp, IMO. I'm not sure what you play, but it can handle any hard rock tones, country, jazz, blues. not sure about metal, i don't play it, but i'm sure with the right box in front of it you could get some great metal sounds.

I like the Supersonic. My problem with it is that the aforementioned is very disappointing. For the speaker I don't think a V30 is a good choice for that amp. V30s are fantastic but not my choice.

If I wasn't playing through a 68 Bassman I would be saving up for a blonde Supersonic.

I dig the SuperSonic. I agree that the vibrolux channel is weak. The overdrive channel is really great when you start to give it some volume. The bassman channel is really good too. Good overall amp

Re: Any Love for the Fender Super Sonic 112?

I used a Blond Oxblood head for a while. Solid rig and I got some great tones. I do prefer the earlier Prosonics and sold mine to buy a Prosonic head.
That said it was a LOT better sounding amp than the Marshall TSL I had and was quite versitile. A retube with a set of premieum tubes and a rebias to warm the amp up will do wonders for the tones and to quiet the amp down.
Overall these are solid workhorse rigs and LIGHT YEARS ahead of the Hot Rod series in tone and build quality!!

Re: Any Love for the Fender Super Sonic 112?

Played one for a good while the other day. I liked the Bassman side pretty well, and the burn side is just OK...doens't really trip my trigger. Overall it'd be a fine amp for the stage, but I'd rather (tonewise) mic up a new Princeton Reverb with a couple of carefully selected pedals.

Either that, or play my '68 Bassman with pedals.
