Super Sonic 22 combo

I got to hear one of these yesterday. Seems like a great sounding amp, and at 22 watts it's just enough that you can push it for breakup at lower volumes. Killer clean channel, and the distortion channel sounds excellent. I heard it with a strat, and I know fender has youtube videos of the amp with humbuckers. I would be interested to see how my humbucker equipped guitars sound through an ss22 combo.

A co worker had a mint Fender Prosonic amp about a year or two ago that I missed out on, so I may be looking at an SS22 as it seems like a great little amp. I'm pretty sure the cascading gain stage thing in the current Super Sonic series of amps came from the original Prosonic designs.

I just bought a home as well as new tires for my car, so my finances are pretty worked. Hopefully in a few months when i can get some money saved I'm ALL OVER that Super Sonic 22! I've always wanted a little fender tube amp, and it sure seems like this is the one to own.

Re: Super Sonic 22 combo

the gain on the Super Sonic is way, way thicker than any freakin Tubescreamer I've ever heard...

Re: Super Sonic 22 combo

Im digging mine, got it last week, my Sg and les paul sound real good and the tele sounds just sweet at the clean channel then I flip to the little 59 crank the volume and get a real nice break up thats nice and clear and chimey. I changed the v1 for a Japanese mullard,v2 EI v3 groove tube Mullard reissue ,v5 Mullard at7 coming wednesday or so. I wanted to have better gain channel! Stock tubes were Sovteks and chinese. Sill gotta break it in more.

Re: Super Sonic 22 combo

I'm not sure about the older supersonic but the new ones are 6V6s.

The 60 watt ones use 6L6s.

I really dug playing the SS22 at Robb's in Boulder. Nice to be able to run it a bit hotter than the old ones. I compared it to the DR Reissue, and it sounded every bit as good, to me. The gain side is the t!ts, though. Wind up the master to 4 or so, then set the first gain to taste after diming the second gain control. Killer.

"Lower" than what? a 100 watt head maybe. But 22 watts at breakup is gonna be loud.

Great sounding amp though. Wouldn't mind having one myself.

Re: Super Sonic 22 combo

Loud means different things at different times. That LOUD 5 watt amp might sound positively tiny with a full band going full bore. 22 watts is enough to monitor onstage without crowding a monitor mix with guitar.

Re: Super Sonic 22 combo

I'm not sure if there are any Fender amps that have used EL34's. All Fender lower powered stuff (under 30w) usually are 6V6 and the higher power are 6L6.

I think the SS22 is way overdue. I tried one of the original SS amps out and it was over powered at 60w. What I mean is, you had to really have it up there to get decent tone. I imagine the 22 is much more manageable.

Re: Super Sonic 22 combo

My perfect amp at last. Deluxe Reverb clean channel, and awesome distortion channel...! I love 6V6s and given my playing erm... skills..., the less dynamic but better for cleans 6V6s are just much better for me.
