Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

I'm thinking of building a blackface PR. Any one dig them? I had one when I was growing up. Wish I still had it. :butkick:

Re: Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

You know I love em':D I'm thinking about building another one based on the weber 14HP kit. Basically a Princeton circuit w/t a added 20uf cap on the the cap can,6L6's and a 12" speaker. The amp is rated at 30 to 35 watts. I imagine it would be a very successful amp in the Celtic line. You could call it something like... The Celtic 'Notre Dame'.:bigok:

Re: Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

Played with a 65' Princeton Reverb a while back in a local guitar shop. Loved the tones I got with that thing...though the 1000+ price tag was a little too rich for my blood ;).

Re: Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

I love Princetons. I had one as my 1st tube amp and didn't even know what the heck it really was. I will own one someday.

I know that TGWIF will chime in with his love too!!!

Re: Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

I have two SF Princeton Reverbs. One I got for free last night, not working , but It shouldn't be much trouble. The other is needing a cap job.

But MAN; do these amps have TONE! Nothing like cranking them up and get that sweet overdrive!

Re: Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

Hey Scott -

There was a lengthy and lively discussion about the Princeton Reverb circuit over on the Hoffman Amps forum a little while ago: here

Don't know if you like Hoffman's layout approach, but these guys even put together two board templates and faceplates w/ measurements!

Hope this helps,

Chip

P.S. You could call her "Brooke" since Brooke Shields went to Princeton and is still damn good lookin' ;)

A Princeton Reverb sounds like an awesome offering! If and when i ever finish my thesis (my never ending project), I was gonna ask you about building something Champ or Princeton. I'd say go for it Scott.

I have '74 SF Princeton Reverb with a 12" and my friend has a '72 SF Princeton Reverb with a stock 10"....I agree that the 12" seems better.

Fantastic little amps. Tone for days.

Does the 12" deliver more volume, more/better bass?

Also, do you like the BF Deluxe Reverb better than the BF Princeton?

Thanks for your opinions - they've always been really helpful!

Re: Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

i do like my dr better than any princeton reverb ive tried but its a different animal and for live playing a princeton wont hang with my drummer. the old tweed single ended ones are fantastic but only about 4 watts which makes them great for recording and home use but youd need a good pa and monitors for stage use. the bf reverb models are about 15w and are great amps, i just prefer the fatter tone of the deluxe

Re: Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

hmm... putting a 12" baffle board in there might make life a little tight for that chassis. No problems on the ones you guys have played?

Also, that adds some dollars to the cab guy that has to be passed on. It could always be an option if the darn thing fits.

This first one is going to be mine and it's going to have a 10 in there since my first amp was stock with a 10 and I want to try to recapture some of my youth with this one.

I remember my first time to play a "gig". Junior High, up on the auditorium stage before school, playing rhythm. I think we were playing wipeout or something like that. I blew the speaker in my Princeton Reverb blackface and my dad was pretty pissed when I got home. I told him I needed a bigger amp and he told me to turn it down. :) True story. But he got me a new speaker that was definitely made of stouter stuff.

Re: Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

i love Princton's...... i have a thing for small Fender tube amps.... I LOVE THEM!

Re: Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

Yes. There's a company that makes what is supposedly a very nice (but very expensive) BF PR clone.

At a reasonable price and especially with a 12 inch speaker, you'd have a winner.

Re: Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

My loins quiver thinking about getting ahold of one of those...original OR a reissue!!!!

Re: Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

Dude, gotta say that the mental picture you just jammed into my brain of your loins quivering is probably going to disturb me for a while. I have a long flight coming up in a few minutes and nothing to think about..... until now. Thanks.:)

Re: Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

Also, a question. If I have the normal black metal (standard) fender style faceplate, do any of you think it would be okay to simply glue my black and silver Celtic Amps amp badge right to it in that little blank spot? I think it would look pretty darn good, but I'm worried it might be perceived as cheap.

But, if I could shave $30-40 off the price of the amp, would anyone mind?

Anyway, parts are ordered. I'm putting it in line.
