Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

Re: Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

I play Devil's Advocate ..

the problem for amp builders is that people will say how much they love a PR, but when it comes time to really lay the coin down, they will opt for something they can gig with

BTW, I've seen Evan gig with his SFPR.

GREAT recording amps.

I concur....

However it's more likely for me to gig with a PR than it would be my Tweed Fender Champ.

I am also in the planning stages of something where I could very well dictate that my only amp for gig would be something like either a PR or the Tweed Champ.

Re: Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

So how much difference is there between a PR and DR, circuit-wise? I had assumed that the PR was mostly a lower output DR with 10" speaker.

I'm need to go look at the circuits on ampwares.

Scott, the one thing that's missing in your line is a small practice/recording combo. I think a BF PR clone would be a great idea. I'd say get a nice 10" for it to keep the size/cost down, but give us a couple of speaker jacks too. Effects loop would be nice too. :)

I don't think the glue-on logo would look bad at all.

Re: Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

I love fender Princeton Reverb's...they are great for recording, however i actually like the single 10...it has GOT to be a killer 10 but if it I prefer it to a 12 in those amps. FWIW, a 12 will fit in a PR pretty easy...Randy Smith used to tick EVM12L's in PR's that he also fitted with BASSMAN trannys...truct me if he can cram all that crap in there you could put a 12 in it.

The PR is a single channel amp,And uses a Split-load Phase Inverter (The key to the PR tone IMO)
The DR is 2 channels, And uses a long tail phase Inverter (like every other BF/SF and even Marshall's etc.) Also had a beefer OT rated at 22 watts.

Side note, You can use a DR OT in a PR if you want.:D Most PR chassis are drilled from the factory to accept the larger DR OT.

Re: Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

Well, that's food for thought fellas. Thanks for the input, as always. I've already ordered a Weber 25 watt 10F150T, lightly doped. I do not have a 10 inch speaker in my lineup. A 12 could be a custom order.

And a DR OT might be just the ticket as well. Hmmm... good stuff to experiment with.

Thanks for the objectivity. I always need that. I see old PR's going for well over $1000 on ebay. Someone is laying down serious coin for really old amps that most often need a lot of work.

So, this one is being built for me. If someone wants to take it off my hands, I'll build another one. I think that is where I'm heading on this one.

Re: Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

SOOOOOOOOO I saw a guy in NYC the other nite with 2 PR's in stereo

Sounded GOOOOOOOOOOOD, used lots of pedals and a strat NICE

So if I was searching for a small, do it all amp - DRRI or PR with a 12"? or 10"? Advise me!

I would NOT be using 2 amps

Re: Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

Scotty, I need MORE POWER!!!!

It's taken me years to do that, but it was worth it :bigok:

Okay, I'm not in the market for one because I've got a 64 Champ, but if I didn't have that Champ I'd definitely buy one from you without hesitation. I've found I actually get BETTER Fender sounds recording with the Champ than bigger Fenders. Could just be me, but I love small combos for recording and big fire breathing high wattage monsters for jamming. Two of those in stereo would be killer, especially for clubbing.

Re: Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

Go for it scotty! I think it is a great idea. I never played smaller blackface combos like the princeton or the champ, but I have played smaller tweed and larger blackfaces and I can assume maybe theyre in the middle when it comes to tone???? Whatever, point is, like you said, people are looking for these all over the place and you seem to want one so theres a definite yes.

As for the logo thing, I say, put the logo on the grill-cloth (a silver and back celtic logo you put on all your amps) where the fender logo would normally be. Then you can come up with a cool signature name typical of celtic and put it on the faceplate. I think it will be worth the extra cash for that... Good luck!

Re: Any love for the Princeton Reverb?

Let me see how much room I have in the one I've ordered. If I can jam a 12 in there, then it'll only be a small fee from the cab guy to change the baffle. Reports to follow.
