Any other rack gear users here?

Re: Any other rack gear users here?

I tried to go Rack a few years ago but couldn't make it work out for me to be honest.

I started out with a 4u Gator Rack case which had in it:

Samson Power Conditioner
Marshall JMP1 Pre-amp
TC Electronics G-Major
Marshall EL84 20/20 Power amp

This was then controlled with a Rivera Headmaster MIDI Controller and 1 of the TC Electronics G-Sharp MIDI Controllers purely as an extension of the Tuner on the G-Major.

The plan was to have a nice small setup that I could drag to a covers gig and not need anything else externally, except a wah, but no amount of tweaking could get me to a point where I was as happy with the rig as I was with an amp head and some pedals.

Luckilly I didn't shell out a huge amount of money for any of the units I bought, but it was a relatively expensive experiment to find out it isn't for me

Re: Any other rack gear users here?

Yeah, I used to have an
ADA MP1
Boss ME-50
Peavey 120/120
2X112 EV12L cabinets.

It was okay, it served it's purpose during that time in my life.

Re: Any other rack gear users here?

I have used rack for a long time and still have a rack rig.

Current rack:

Furman power conditioner
X2 digital wireless
voodoo labs GCX
rack draw with adrenalinn III
POd X3 Pro

Then a blonde tolex rack with a peavey classic 50/50 into 2 blonde Avatar 2x12s loaded with lead 80s.

Used to use Peavey tubefex into classic 50/50 into peavey stereo 4x12 and before that ADA MP1 into peavey classic 60/60 into a peavey 4x12 and 2x12 in stereo.

My first ever amp was a midi programmabel Peavey programax. . . . .

Re: Any other rack gear users here?

I've always been kind of freaked out by rack setup. they seem uber complicated.
Actually they're way simpler than a board full of pedals, if they're set up right.
This used to be my pedalboard:

One tap on one of the buttons on the MIDI Wizard, and it would change channels on my Hafler tube preamp, as well as call up all the effects I wanted with that channel. WAY easier than turning effects on and off one at a time.

My rack gear, mostly used in the home studio now, though I used to gig with the Hafler preamp, the Rocktron Replifex, the Korg A3 and the Marshall power amp.

Hughes & Kettner Cream Machine and Blues Master recording preamps (these don't sound bad into a speaker cab either)
Mesa/Boogie Formula recording preamp (has a direct out, but these days I run it into a power amp and into a guitar cab)

Marshall 20/20 stereo 20 watt tube power amp.

Re: Any other rack gear users here?

The thread says "rack gear". It doesn't say it has to be guitar gear.
Some more, less guitar-centric rack gear that I use in the home studio:
P1010055.jpg

At the top is my MOTU 2408mk3 audio interface.
Then an RSP Technologies Intelliverb,
Digitech Studio 400
Digitech TSR-12
Alesis Quadraverb 2
A second INtelliverb
A patch bay
Zoom 9010
Zoom 9200

All of these are used as send effects in the home studio, so they are used for guitars, vocals, drums and keys. Though they each can do delays, chorus, flanging, etc, I use them mainly as reverbs.
These days, if I wanna get something mixed fast, I just use plugin reverbs. But if I'm mixing something more ambitious, Cubase has the ability to route signals out to rack gear and back. None of these are a Lexicon PCM 91 or anything, but the studio room reverbs on the Intelliverbs sound great on rhythm guitars, and the Zoom units (not cheap entry level units, but Zoom's high end studio processors) have some reverbs that sound great on vocals, as well as on guitars.

Re: Any other rack gear users here?

Resurrecting an old thread...

Anyone still have love for rack setups?

Here is my rig when I was finishing putting it together. Yes, my girlfriend's pet rattie ran into the camera shot.

gear003.jpg

Furman 1215 regulator/conditioner
Mesa/Boogie Triaxis preamp with Telefunken ECC83 and Mullard ECC83 tubes
TC Electronic G-major effects processor
Mesa/Boogie 2:Ninety power amplifier
Rocktron MIDI Mate controller
SKB 4u ATA rack cases

I generally use it at my friend's house for jam sessions through my Crate GS412s cabinet with Celestion 80s and his Rectifier 4x12 cab with Vintage 30s.

I really need to get a camera shot of the full rig when it is completely set up.

Re: Any other rack gear users here?

The rat adds a certain coolness, depending on what kind of music you do.

Obviously you are in a Jazz bigband, right? :-D

Re: Any other rack gear users here?

Here's my current rig:
Jackson King V EMG-81/18v mod tuned to Eb
Korg DTR-2 tuner> Tapco 2200 rack EQ> Boss MT-2>Digitech RDS1900 rack delay> Engl620 tube preamp> Marshall9200 poweramp> Marshall 1960 straight.

Re: Any other rack gear users here?

This is for acoustic guitar and vocals. Acoustic goes into the tuner and chorus on top with the Lexicon for delay and reverb when needed using the mixer's two sends. I don't need to run a monitor mix as it's just me singing with guitar so left goes to a monitor wedge and right goes to main.

At home I also run out of the Marshall into the mixer to add effects. The effects take on a whole new dimension when run through the PA. I had been running a Crown amp but at almost 40 pounds the rack was a real back breaker. The Carvin only tips at 15 pounds and sounds just as good. 400 watts per side leaves lots of headroom.

Re: Any other rack gear users here?

Been using a rack set up pretty much since I started playing guitar.

My set up is very simple and I don't use a lot of effects. Right now I have a Triaxis with a Mesa 50/50 power amp and an old Roland GP8 effects processor. I also have a Furman (of course) and and old small rackmount tuner. I want to upgrade the tuner and sell the 50/50 and get myself a 2:90. All goes into a Carvin 4X12 and a Boogie Recto cab.

I've also used a JMP1 in the past although I sold that. I also used an old like Marshall 9000 solid state preamp that I have and don't use. I also have, don't don't use and need to sell a Peavey Rockmaster preamp.

Re: Any other rack gear users here?

That old ART SGE unit brings back memories. I've still got one but the LCD is wonkey. Shame really as the rest of the unit is just fine.

The Simul 2:Ninety won't disappoint. I had a Strategy 500, but had to sell it under financial duress. The 2:Ninety is smaller, lighter, and has a more crisp sound to it. The Strategy was a beast, 200 watts per side, 6L6 and 6550 tubes; it bordered on being too much. The 2:Ninety fits pretty comfortably. It has a nice amount of headroom, but sounds great at moderate volumes.

I saved the image to my imgur account so I can post it in al Proco RAT threads from now to eternity

:D

Re: Any other rack gear users here?

I'm still using pretty much the same stuff from my post in this thread 2 years ago

But I did get rid of the 2101 - turned out to be almost the same thing as the ADA/TSR12 combo, but did have some notable differences, mostly on the programming side.

Still have the 1101, though.

What I'd really like to find/have is some sort of distributor for the guitar that would split out the signal to various Inputs, similar to what an A/V Distribution Amp does for multi-display setups.

Right now I just run into a Morley ABY (set to A+B), with one line running to the ADA Input and the other running to the 1101 Input. To use the Bass POD I have to use a separate cable, and if I want to swap either of the Legends into the chain I have to swap cables from another Input.

I'm thinking a device that has one Master input and maybe 7-10 Outputs, and each Output of that would then go to the Inputs of the various rack gear (and maybe one straight out to my head/cab setup), and I simply use the mixer channel volumes to dial in whichever unit I want to use.

That'd be nice to have, but then I'm probably the only one who uses multiple preamps
