Any pancake body LP owners out there?

I'm just asking out of curiosity. I know the bad rep they have. I have a 75 Custom that has been through hell. It's toured all over the southeast, the head has been broken off and repaired, even back in my metal days I had it routed for a Kahler. Since then I've taken the Kahler off and it has this big ugly hole on the top but the thing still sounds better than most other LPs I pick up and play. I even have a nice '60 reissue that I compare it to. They both sound different but I like being able to drag the 75 around just because I'm not scared to take it out of the case. It was my first real guitar. I bought it new in 75 and it's just like on old friend I could never do without.

Speaking of the route hole. Does anyone know of a great luthier that has done route fills who is located in the southeast? She wants her hole filled. She's just a slut. An ugly slut but a sweet singing slut just the same.

i used to have a '74 lp dlx that was a sandwich body, nice guitar but it had the worst faded burst. looked like mustard in some spots and blood stains in others. if i had to guess, someone spilled a beer and some whisky on it and left it out in the sun on a nice hot cloudless day

not sure about the south east. if you were further north we could do that for ya

You know my cherry burst is actually quite nice. It's stayed nice looking after all these years too. However it does have an ugly three piece top but the stain still looks good.

Jeremy, if I can't find somebody local that I trust I may get in touch and just have to risk packing it up real tight and getting it to you overnight or something. The only think I worry about is the heat in the delivery planes or trucks this time of the year. I may have to wait for cooler weather.

You guys remember that LP "ta sing da blues" that guy showed on eBay that had been played to hell and back!? that was cool.

And had a pancake body.

Re: Any pancake body LP owners out there?

Sorry, my custom is a 1977 (after pancakes).

If you want it done right, Dan Erlewine in Athens, OH.

Re: Any pancake body LP owners out there?

Don't have any experience with a guitar like that, but I know a luthier in Nashville that may be able to help if that's SouthEast enough for you. It's an authorized repair shop for Gibson guitars. It's a one man operation located next to Vanderbilt University, super nice guy. He's done some work for me in the past and has always done a great job.

It's been through hell, had a broken headstock, and was even routed for a Kahlar? You bet I wanna see it too!

I tried getting in touch with Dan some time back by email. I never got a response. I figured either he doesn't read his mail or else he has been too busy.

I'm agreeing with you brotha! I hope to God my LP Studio looks well-played, banged up, and bruised to hell by the time I'm done with it!

Hey, do LP Studios still have that smooth Nitrocelluose finish on them? I'm looking at them and they seem to just have some gloss on them.

I think it's just the gloss. I'm not too sure though so some other LP savvy Gibson owner/knower can weigh in if I'm wrong.

I'm sure the historics do. They're Vintage Original Spec., so, if they had a nitro finish in the 50s and 60s, they should have them on the Historic Les Pauls and other reissue guitars from those time periods.

Re: Any pancake body LP owners out there?

dan does great work but is VERY expensive and there is usually a long wait. a friend of mine had a few things done by him and the work was great, and almost $2000 with shipping

All Gibsons use Nitrocelluose.

I knew he was expensive and very busy. When I described to him in the email that it was a Norlin pancake he probably laughed and hit the ol' delete button.

I heard sometime back about a guy in Nashville that worked on country music stars guitars. I forgot his name now but he got rave reviews. Are you aware of anybody in Nashville that does this?

Re: Any pancake body LP owners out there?

What about using that Mirabella guy in NY State if you are shipping it to have the work done.... if he rebuilt a smashed Townshend Les Paul Goldtop from the 70's and repainted LP's from the 50's i'm sure your LP Custom would not be a a problem for that guy.... I don't have the site handy....

Maybe the site is www.mirabellaguitars.com

My 76 Les Paul Deluxe with the Pancake body has been to hell and back too... The neck has been completely rebuilt.... The guy i used for the job did great work and at the time it was pretty cheap concidering how much blood sweat and tears he put into it... The neck had big problems and was warping all the time.... The neck joint was done baddly and the fingerboard was popping up off the face of the guitar near the joints on the E string sides.... So he removed the fingerboard, corrected the neck joint, made a new bound fingerboard by hand for the neck, and resprayed it all to a seam-less finnish... The neck was repaired 13 years ago or so and still makes the guitar feel like new.....

The downsides to this repair job, and things i would of done different, 1-the neck is extremely fat.... so fat i have a hard time with my wrists on it and if i could go back i would of had the neck reshaped and a slightly thinner board.... 2-the inlay marterials were hard to find at the time..... No one including Gibson would not sell the repairman precut LP Standard/Deluxe inlays... At least that was the story i was told... Anyways the inlays were done with Pearloid plastic, pickguard material. The repair guy did an exellent job of hand making the Gibson style inlays and that side i'm extremely happy with..... but they do not look 100% right.... Now Stewmac carries the inlays precut and in stock....

all the pain in the butt of having a lemon of a Les Paul, and putting up with years in repair shops, the cost of repairs, and finally having an LP that i find extremely hard on my wrists to play for any extented periods of time is kind of funny in a way... I almost needed wrist surgery after using this LP for too many hours day after day...

It sounds great! I have a Duncan mini in the neck and a full sized JB Trembucker in the bridge.... Because of the thick fingerboard the bridge/strings are up higher, and i was able to just sit the metal base plate bottom of the JB on top of the MINI's rout.... i didn't rout it out any wood at all... I used a Trembucker as the baseplate seems to be slightly more narrow... I have new Gibson LP Deluxe pickups sitting in my dresser but have not installed them.... I don't think i will now as i like the way it is....

I should of never bought this LP, i should of sold it, but i still hang onto it.... it sounds great!
