Any Peavey Vypyr Fans Here

I have the mini-stack, A 30 watt SS head with 2 112 cabs. I really like it. I actually sold my XXX and don't really miss it. I play Mostly modern metal and hardcore. I think it's one of the best modelers to date. too Bad they've discontinued them after the VIP series came out. Maybe that means the VIP series will be expanded into heads, and tube hybrids. all there are now are 3 combo amps. Anyways... just thought I'd ask if there are any love for the vypyr series.

All you need is a circular saw and you can make a head out of any combo amp. :D

Here's my Vypyr 30:

I'll probably do the same with a VIP 1 or VIP 2 when I get one.

Re: Any Peavey Vypyr Fans Here

I was wondering the same thing earlier today, I saw a 120 watt head for $250. Is it worth it? can it do those models on it reasonably well? I'm really only after the 6505, the rectifier and a useable clean, the Deizel might be nice too.

I have a vyper 15
it sounds good, like the cleans
does the heavy metal Peavey models well

the small one I I have seems "flimsy"
it may be solid as a rock but its soooooo light
and the cabinet is made of really thin 1/2 inch plywood

looks as if it were dropped on its corner it shatter

maybe not, but it looks that way

Re: Any Peavey Vypyr Fans Here

Had the Vypyr 75 and thought it sounded very good across the board. The models gave fairly good renditions of the targeted amps for the most part, and the effects were quite good. I ended up selling it because of its computer-like traits: it would lock up and require a re-start and was cumbersome to go from setting to setting on-the-fly in a live performance. This was using the Sanpera I. I had difficulty using the Sanpera I live, as the buttons were too close and I would inadvertantly hit two which would produce an unwanted change or worse, a freeze-up. Correction of freeze-ups were too time consuming to be acceptable. It's not that they occurred frequently, but even once a night live was too much for me.

Nice sounding amp, but not for gigging due to navigation issues.

It is a really nice amp. It can do what you are asking for but I must warn you that I did not find the 6505 model to really sound like a 6505. It sounds good but its not exactly the same. I definitely recommend trying it and seeing if it will suit you. I dont think you will do much better with anything else for $250

I'm a big fan of the 5150/6505 and I end up using the K-Stein model on mine. :)

That said, it should do what you're after. Be sure to test it with your cabinet. (Since that's the tube model you NEED to have a cabinet attached at all times.)

Re: Any Peavey Vypyr Fans Here

Quite a few times I almost pulled the trigger on the 30 watt version, and I'm still considering one of the VIP's after seeing Alex Skolnick demo them. The one thing that stopped me from buying one though, was all the stories I was hearing about them malfunctioning. Have any of yours malfunctioned (other than when accidentally hitting two buttons)?

I'm a bit torn between one of these and the Yamaha THR10x.

Yes, lock-ups occurred at times other than accidently hitting two buttons and for no apparent reason. (Hitting two buttons is also a prescribed method for calling up certain functions i.e. changing banks of presets and other functions.) It's much like the older Microsoft computer OS's.....frustrating mysteries.

My experience pre-dates the VIP models.

The Kstein on the SS version sounds good. The 6505 was a lot better on the tube version. I've played with a few of them. The 15, 100, 120 and 60. I still own the 15 and 60 just as dick around amps in other rooms of the house.

Re: Any Peavey Vypyr Fans Here

Mine rarely freezes up. My favorites models are rec and k-stein, seem best for the lower tunings IMO. I do however dig the JSX and 6505. DZl is cool too. It's kinda marshally. has a lot of mid range. XXX is my least favorite - sounds nothing like my XXX did. JSX is a lot closer. Probably because the lead channel on a JSX is the same as the crunch channel on a XXX. I can't find much use for the 'right side' or vintage amp models other than for cleans. They're just fun amps all around.

I can't wait to get these stock pups out of my ARZ307 and get the set of DD7's in it and then see how it sounds!

Re: Any Peavey Vypyr Fans Here

I've had ZERO issues with my Tube 120 Combo. No hang-ups, freezes, etc. Updates went just fine, can't complain about a thing as far as reliability goes. It's just an amazing amp if you're after sheer versatility. Highly overlooked and the Tube models really do take the modeling concept to the next level.

I hope someone picked up that Tube 120 Head for $250...that's a killer deal!

By the way, if someone is looking for a super-nice Vypyr Tube 120 2x12 combo, mine's up for sale, complete with the Sanpera 1 foot controller (see here). If it doesn't sell, I'll be just as happy...it's a great amp!
