Any Rickenbacker 620 owners out there?

Securb

One of Jerry's Kids
I played one years ago and fell in love with it and I am starting to GAS for one again. The problems is there are not many music stores you can play one in so I would have to order online. Is Rickenbacker still cranking out quality? I know if I buy it online and it disapoints I can always return it. I just want the skinny before dropping serious cash. FWIW I am thinking about the Fireglow not that finish matters.

If you've never played a Rickenbacker, I'd urge you to do so before dropping money on one- they just don't feel like any other guitar. EDIT: I guess it sounds like you did play one and enjoy it though.

That said I'd love one - but a 650/Dakota is what I keep an eye out for :)

I've played two Rickenbackers and was disappointed with both. I find they only do one thing well and that was the signature jangly sound. I found them borderline unplayable and without a Vox and compressor they sound useless.

Love 620's, neck are a little skinny but not unusable. Never played a poorly made one fwiw.

I dig them

I have a 420-12 and a 325. Finish matters. You want to see the wood grain. They put all the flawed woods under solid colors - I got that tip direct from a guy on the Rickenbacker shop floor back in the 1990’s.

Ricks are one trick ponies. Well maybe two tricks- bridge PU or bridge with a little bit of neck mixed in.

The neck PU by itself is useless on all Ricks. You can’t adjust height, they are mud city. Listen to Anyway Anyhow Anywhere by The Who to hear the PUs being slammed from bridge to neck. Night and day. But you can get some mileage out of just the bridge PU.

Stringing them is a pain and setup/neck adjustments aren’t so easy. Ricks are neat guitars but are not great instruments. But they do do that one trick pretty well.

Did a quick look and found another 650.

Re: Any Rickenbacker 620 owners out there?

I think the 650 also has a more 'normal' neck profile. I swear I've seen people shim the pickup height too.

I don't know where you got this from. The 620 necks are anything BUT skinny. Neck width at the nut is a full 1 5/8" wide and the neck is actually pretty thick and full. Not at all like a modern "C" shaped Les Paul and not even close to a Wizard or a PRS.

It is a very well made instrument. It even has the "Rick-O-Sound" (stereo jack).

I absolutely don't think of it being a "0ne-trick-pony". (I don't think Tom Petty would think so either). But it DOES do the jangle exceptionally well, so well that you get the feeling that that's all that it does. The neck pup is not muddy! It's as jangly as the bridge pup. But just like any guitar, the neck POSITION is going to sound fuller (with more mids and bass) and louder, and thus give the impression of being muddy when compared to the bridge pup.

They are as easy to string as any trapeze tailpiece guitar on the market, and neck adjustments are the same as any other guitar...you take off the truss rod cover and adjust the truss rod when/if needed.

I don't know where many of you are getting your information, but it is dead wrong. I've had my 620 Fireglow for about 10 years and find absolutely nothing to complain about (unlike Gibson, LTD, PRS SE, etc.).

Plus, the fret ends are the best factory finished job of any guitar. Smooth as silk. Out of 3 dozen guitars that I own that were purchased, I can only say that about two other guitars...and the Ric is even better than those two. Other than these three exceptions, I have had to do a fret job on every guitar I have ever bought. I'm very picky about frets. That's one of the main reasons I even got into building guitars in the first place. The 620 doesn't need any work...it just needs to be played.

One other thing:
Yes the pups can't be height adjusted...just like all dog-ear P-90 pups. You can raise them by adding a shim under the pup and to lower them you can remove the thick neoprene spacer that is already there (I wouldn't recommend doing that, however, because it does mess with the tone).

If you want that Ric sound, the 620 is the best value of any.

Re: Any Rickenbacker 620 owners out there?

I know someone from another forum that just bought a 620 Ric in blonde finish and he is very pleased with it. He's a Strat guy but I think he's a Rickenbacker convert now.;)

I've played more than a couple 620's, I like them a lot. I am sure I will own one but 1 5/8 feels a little skinny to me in the cowboy chord region.

That is cool I don't play too many cowboy chords. Lots of great information from all of you.

@GuitarDoc (or anyone who knows) - how does it take to gain? Like I said it has been decades since I have played a 620.

Great.
The pups are single coils with much less bass and mids than a typical bucker so the gain tones are not muddy at all. Retains a very crisp high end under gain with smooth mids (not unlike a Strat).

Re: Any Rickenbacker 620 owners out there?

Parkway Music north of Albany has a blue one in stock. Only a few hours’ drive from you. I’ll post a pic later.

Edit: Added crappy phone pic. IDK why it's sideways.

I appreciate the effort but Albany is over a 6-hour drive for me I am in Boston. You did inspire me to look up Rick dealers. I have two within 5-miles from work. Looks like I might be taking a couple of long lunches this week.

Re: Any Rickenbacker 620 owners out there?

I’m in Marlborough MA today and my phone says 2 hours and 37 minutes. Ain’t no six hours.

Rickenbacker Road Trip!
