Any thoughts about the Celestion G12H?

Recently I've installed EL84 adaptors in my 6L6 amp. I just love the tone change but the speaker it's now the origin of my worries. It's a Celestion V12-80 and it's very dark sounding, probably due the high rated wattage (80Watts, now the amp it's 18Watts). I am thinking in replacing it with a Celestion G12H.

Any opinion about this speaker?

Yes. It's my favorite ceramic magnet Celestion. I use one in each of my blackface Fender Deluxe Reverb amps. Great tone! Smoother treble, thicker mids and more bass than the Vintage 30. Lew

I think it has more bass and more highs than the V30, but not as much mids. I have two G12H30's and two V30's in an X-pattern in my Mesa cab, they compliment each other perfectly.

I would say the G12H30 is the C5 of speakers, vintage voiced, big bottom and top, with a well-balanced but not as pronounced midrange.

I would also suggest looking into the new Eminence Patriot and Redcoat series speakers. THey have put out some killer sounding stuff that costs less than Celestion. I think they have more choices and better descriptions of the tones their speakers deliver. Check it out.

The G12H30 is about the favorite speaker of the low-watt DIY amp crowd. Well, that and the Celestion Blue. Search on AX84.com and 18Watt.com for more discussion.

Also, Ted Weber makes the 1230 series speakers, great clones of the vintage G12H30. Custom-order tweakable, and a bit cheaper than Celestions.

Edit: I just noticed you're in Europe, so what TC & I said about prices vs. Celestion may not be true.

The new Eminence Wizard is supposed to the G12h30 clone. It's getting great reviews.
Otherwise, I believe the G12h30 is one of the best celestions going.

Probably it'll be the other way around. :laugh2: . A G12H goes here for 130$ (retail price) which you can reduce to 110 $ cause dealers ussually apply the 15%.

The Weber 1230 goes for 95$ and the Eminence Wizard for 99.9$ so I guess the Celestion it's still my best option.

Thoose amps are about 18Watts, aren't they? An amp with that wattage it isn't consider much louder, but with a 100db speaker those might be gusty combos. Do you think it's possible to gig with that set up? (18Watts+G12H)

in a small club, if you dont need much clean headroom a small amp like that should be fine. throw a mic in front of it if you need a little more

You are right about the mic... I have a Shure SM57 , that should be perfectly fine to get the good tones throught the PA.

Many people loves that combo!!! . I can consider ussing my V12-80 and the G12H in a home built cabinet.

How many watts does your combo have? I have the suspect that you have to use high powered speakers in high powered amps. And also the other way around, low powered speakers in low powered combos.

Althought there may be some exceptions...

All that matters is that the Ohms match up and the wattage rating of your speakers combined is equal or more than your amp. Remember a 30 watt speaker mixed with an 80 watt speaker cannot handle 100 watts, it can only handle 60. The load is spread evenly so you have to average the wattage by how many speakers you have, based on the lowest wattage speaker rating of what you have.

Yeah, I know the rules . I was talking about TONE. High wattage rated speaker need a high wattage amp to get moved, otherwise the can sound too dark and tight. Sometimes that can be a desired effect but most of the time you want your speaker to give the best on its working range.
