any tips on recording with midi?

im using sonar and i was trying to get groove agent to work and it only works with midi files i think, which is understandable. so imported a random midi file into sonar to test it out, and i cant even hear the midi file when i press play in sonar. my midi playback is fine, if i play a midi file in WMA it plays fine. the midi ports on my sound card work fine too, because i tried recording midi with my radioshack keyboard and it showed up in sonar, but i cant hear what ive recorded, i can only see that it is being recorded. :smack:

does anyone know how to fix this situation? im thinking its a software problem. i think i set up the midi outputs properly, but idk how to be sure. i think im going to register over at the cakewalk problem and ask this question there.

Hey Slash, what town are you in? I'm in Caldwell, about five miles northwest (I think) from Newark. I'm just learning all this midi stuff myself.

Is Groove Agent a drum plug in? If so, are you adding it to the synth rack first then choosing it for the ins and outs (I believe) on the midi track? I was having that problem with BFD until I whipped out the manual and really studied it. Could be the midi stuff or the output settings too. That manual is huge and frustrating isn't it? But it does provide the answers, when you can find them, lol.

Let me know how you make out. I'll help in any way my feeble old mind can.

LMAO. Thanks for the plug TO. I have a black belt in Sonar. My dojo will be opening soon, LOLOLOL.

Actually I'm quite the beginner, even though I've owned three different versions of it over the last four years or so. I treated myself to a new computer last year with lotsa memory and I'm forcing myself to learn this thing. I'm glad I am, because it's great. I don't know if I'll ever use cut and paste or loops for stuff like my guitars bass or vocals though. It just feels like cheating. I even hate to punch in to fix something. Would rather do the whole thing over. I'm really old school, but I feel like it kills the feel and the mojo to punch, loop, cut & paste the true love of my life--guitars.
