Any way to put a Delay in an amp without an FX loop?

i am getting a VHT Deliverance but it doesnt have an FX loop.

so any ideads on how i can add a delay unit to it?

i know i could put it in the front but wouldnt that really mess with the tone?

i could also buy an attenuator and put it through the back.

any other ideas to put it in the back without an attenuator, maybe?

I also thought about the problem with a delay in a amp that doesn't have an FX loop, since I have a non-master marshall...

You can use a delay in front, as long as you play clean or use a OD pedal in front of the delay for dist. Amp distortion and delay is just gonna end up a MESS!

I never thought about a FX loop through a attenuator though! There has to be someone out there who makes a loop thingy to attach as an attenuator if you don't have a FX loop or don't want to shell out the money for a attenuator, right?

well attenuators already have the fx loop thing already built in. i know the THD does.

i was just wondering if there was a fx loop thingy you can attach to the back without the attenuator.

I run the H&K Replex thru the front with no issues.

Amp is set mainly clean & I go guitar-->Vox wah-->Mesa Boogie BottleRocket-->T. Rex Mudhoney-->H&K-->amp.

Sounds fine to me....

I suppose it depends on what tone you want out of the amp. I have the Edana set pretty clean & use the pedals to dirty things up. If you're using the amp basically for all the dirt, it might take some tweaking with the pedal to get things where you want it...but it can be done.

FWIW...I use ALL my pedals in the front end as not a one of the amps I own has an FX loop! I also run a fairly large board and I do runa delay (DD-5) and have no issues with it at all...

Same, I have a relativley big board and run the whole lot into the amp. I like my delay being where it is in the chain, before the amp distortion. But i do aim for a somewhat lo-fi tone anyway, which i guess you wont be with a VHT.

yeah i want more of the Van Halen kinda tone, so i dont know if the Delay in the front will cut it.

i will have to try it out and see.

the Deliverance is made more as a Plexi style amp so they say it loves pedals in front of it. i dont know how much this will be true of a time-based effect though.

Just stick the delay in fornt of the amp and get on with it. What do you think they used to do back in the day? Echoplex into a cranked Marshall sounds just fine

Classic 70s rockers like Pagey and Robbo had their tape echoes before the amp and it worked great. It's just a case of finding the right delay/echo to use and setting it up right. Something like a Boss DD-3 can sound a bit hard in front of the amp but many years ago I used a WEM Copicat tape echo and it sounded great.

I'm hoping to acquire a 70s Marshall with no loop soon so I'm going to be looking for a delay that will work well in front of the amp. Any suggestions guys?

A THD Hotplate does not have an effects loop. It has a line level output.
You do not want to place a delay pedal after your power amp.
If your amp has a reverb tank, It is possible to 'break' the circuit at that point for use as an effects loop.

If you are talking about a rack mount effect unit like a Lexicon or other there may be an impedence issue going from your guitar to the delay unit which would affect the tone. You will need to find out what the input is on the delay unit as pedals are designed to take a line in from a guitar, rack mounted studio proceesors are not for the most part.

As you add gain on the amp, it's best to decrease the wetness of a delay, so it's a lot more subtle. Although analog delays with a lot of headroom sound the best, I still get a good result with the Line 6 DL-4. I just mix it in very subtle.

1) try the pedal out & if it sucks, don't use it.

2) OR.........listen to the advice already given.
