I've seen demos of the Crate Powerblock that sounded surprisingly good. First and second generations of Peavey Transtube amps are nice as well.

You might also like some of the old 80's Marshall solid states.

Another recommendation for Randall. Check out the KH120 and the RG series.

Re: any worth while solid states out there ?

I would say as stated earlier an Orange Crush cr120 either the head with an orange 2x12 or the combo, I'm using it and i freakin love it. Thought about selling it for a while but had a change of heart, you get 80% of the pure orange tube sound för 1/10 of the price of a rockaverbe 😀
The clean is amazing and takes pedals like a champ, the dirty Chanel is also good and with a maxxon od808 in front of it you can get some really great tones just check out Ryan Bruce's review of it. Fluff on Youtube

i will admit that the RH 200 has great cleans, has 2 sets of EQ knobs which are handy, but the distortion was a let down to me.. I dunno but I just didn't jive with it.. Just "felt" very SS.. The RG 100es.. the cleans weren't as clean as the RH 200 IMO.. not bad, just not as clear IMO, had 1 set of EQ knobs, but the distortion felt very natural and tube-like, especially at loud volumes.. sounds very pissed off and in your face.. In saying that, the RG is probably not the best choice for a person that cant crank it.. Sure you can flick that sustain switch,If you like "a can-o-bees" sound.. but hey, it gives you alot of gain at low volumes. I just dont think the trade off is worth it and never used it..

few amps i will comment on or even recommend on this or any other forum, but i actually own the RH 200, and the RG 100es.. The RG i have owned since '90 and the RH 200, for about 3 to 4 years

ONE NOTE: if the OP get a RG 100es make sure the footswitch is included.. this is very important as you will not be happy if you dont do this.... Sure you can turn one channel down as some will probably suggest BUT that one channel will never ever be 100% offand will always bleed into the signal..+ and this is more important.. Because of how the circuitry is in the RG100, it really needs the footswitch in the circuit.. It honestly doesnt sounds quite right when the footswitch is not hooked up.. I looked at the schematic years ago, and i theorized that the red channel needed the small voltage drop over the LED's, to sound "right".. perhaps im "full of sh*t".. perhaps it was in my head.. i dunno.. I do know that the sound to my ears was a tad different and this is taking into account the bleed of the clean channel.. Just like some of ya here the difference of magnets in a 'pup. i heard/felt a difference

edit>>> not dissin' your recommendation Demanic or didnt mean to..just giving my comparison of the 2.. If I had never heard a RG 100, the RH 200 would be awesome but the RG just set the bar too high and at an early age too

I enjoyed my Marshall MG50–great tone for a ridiculously low price (like $100 on CL.) I've only heard good things about the Fender Mustang amps. Peavey Bandits are also a solid choice (pun fully intended ;) )

Re: any worth while solid states out there ?

The Tech 21 Trademark 300 is wonderful, if you can find one. 3 channels, but has a really wide range from super clean to super not. I use a Tech 21 Trademark 60 combo, which is another choice- 2 channels, and sounds wonderful direct.

Re: any worth while solid states out there ?

Mm mm Bandit yeeesss
That and get a used one
And be prepared for a speaker change
Most folks do the like the stock ones in Bandits

Re: any worth while solid states out there ?

finally it's uploaded, this is a pure thrash tone with my block logo envoy

the only things in my signal chain active are the mxr berzerker overdrive and a noise gate straight on my envoy, which is stock

Re: any worth while solid states out there ?

Ok, so once upon a time i had a room of guitars and amps. These days as i made the financial suicide of getting married etc, i have had to depart with my gear and somewhat gave up on the whole music thing, as being viable in my area was getting too difficult and work etc.... So i have decided that i am going to get a hold of solid state amp head and cab. Before people bash me for not getting a tube amp, i play predominately metal with its roots in thrash. Kind of if you took Testament and sprinkled them with Pantera is kind of where we are these days. I do not require a tube amp to achieve this , i do not require 4 channels etc. I have played for 20 years nearly, my days of spending thousands on Diezel, Mesa, Engl, Buddha etc are done.

I also quite like the sharp, harshish edge solid state amps can carry with the distortion being so responsive. They are also alot easier to manage and dial in at lower volumes than most tube amps. I dont have alot of interest in digital amps, i think most of them sound pretty ordinary. So anyone have any ideas?.

At the moment im playing a Mustaine Sig model, mahogany body, mahogany neck, Ebony fingerboard, set neck, SD Livewire active pickups. I have never owned many solid states before, but from what i know, Randall RG100es, is usually a pretty good option and Laney made some decent ones in the HCM series. There is the Warhead and X2 etc, but is it justifiable considering the price point difference. Does anyone have any ideas , any new solid states that are in the sub $800 au range worth a look at?
I have an Ibanez TBX 150 solid state head as a backup and its truly best at highest gains, its hard to believe it sounds so good ! They are cheap on ebay and everywhere! It sounds great at all voulumes, and the clean channel is nice as well,,I have a new EVH 3 LBX tube head, but the Ibanez sounds awesome so I play it a lot to save my tubes! Currently I have the TBX plugged into my 2-12" cab with 2 Celestion V-Type speakers and it sound awesome! I will purchase a couple more of the TBX 150 heads as they are cheap and have a great grind!

Re: any worth while solid states out there ?

I have an RH-200 and a buddy of mine has an old 120 ES. Brandenburg is correct about the ES having a better distortion channel. But I get my distortion from a pedal and the clean channel of my RH sounds devastating with it.
In all, both good amps and I'm tempted to try running them in stereo.

Sunn Beta Lead.

It is a 2x12 ss combo from
the 70s. I used to have one. Wish I still did. Loud as hell, brutal gain, tons of crunch, good cleans. It sounds "solid state" in a good way.

you know..I was also thinking of running the two randalls in stereo too.. run both amps through the art sgx 2000 or something like that

Re: any worth while solid states out there ?

I was thinking of some sort of decent stereo chorus/delay. Or a pan pedal. Maybe even a good aby pedal that doesn't lose tone in the "y" position.

Re: any worth while solid states out there ?

I really don't like my Fender Mustang practice amp much. And yet, it's the best sounding SS amp I've played in recent years.

I bought the Fender and then sold it in disgust. Then I picked up a small SS Marshall Combo. That was the worst. Sold that and bought an Orange Crush 20RT. It was a one trick pony and the cleans were terrible. Gave up and bought the Fender again.

In the 90s I had a Fender Stage 112 SE. For a loud, SS amp, it wasn't terrible. I'd love to have it back compared to the others I've tried.
