Mine is the old Boogie .50 cal + head I have. I haven't played it out in months and almost traded it off but pulled it out to play in Church today and it knocked my lights out!!
One day it's fighting me on stage and I hate the way it feels the next it's knocking my lights out with the tones:confused:.
Anybody else go through this with a particular amp??
from this morning on my Fender 2/12 running my PRS Custom 24 and I'm running no effects at all here.

Describes my feelings for my former marshall jtm30 to a T. Some days I loved it, other times we fought hard to get along. Very strange.

HAD....Duncan Convertible. Sounded killer, broke the bank regularly

Re: Anybody else have an amp they have a LOVE/ HATE relationship with?

Electra-Dyne. When I can run it loud enough I love it. When I can't, I don't.

That's exactly how I feel about my Blackstar ht40. There are times when I just can't get inspired by or enjoy the tone. Then some days with my band or by myself it sounds great. I've been getting into vox sounds and been so on the fence about selling it for a vox. Constant back and forth.

I'm in the more hate than love camp with my H&K Edition Tube 20. It sounds decent, but I'm never blown away; I either dislike how I sound with it or it's simply acceptable. My main gripe is the rather narrow band of usable gain on the lead channel. Below 12 o'clock it's almost unuseably bright and thin regardless of what I do EQ-wise, and above 2-3 o'clock is over-saturated and compressed with PAF-ish pickups. My Explorer with the Duncan Custom is waaaaaaay too much unless I feel like playing metal and I usually don't. Second the clean channel is non-master and REALLY clean. Forget about any sort of grit at all because it's just insanely loud before any breakup starts to happen. Lastly the active EQ can be a bit finicky, but I've got that worked out for the most part.

Just to be clear, the Edition Tube isn't a bad amp. It's actually a really great amp and sounds quite a bit better than a Tubemeister 18 IMO, it just isn't the right amp for me. The sooner I come to accept that and move on the happier I'll be I think... Anyone looking for a hot-rodded JCM800 meets Fender / Vox in a 40lb 1x12 box really should check one out.

I did, it was also a Mesa.

I don't have it anymore.

Yep me too. My dual recto is like that.

I bought it before I really knew much about amps, and I had always wanted a Mesa. But it's too much amp for me and keeping all three channels balanced on volume is a challenge.

I now use my Express 5:50+ as my main gigging and recording amp. It is great, 90% of the time. Sometimes it needs to warm up good before it really starts cooking.

I think the dual recto would be cool if I just ran the thing on one channel with a little bit of gain and pushed pedals through it. Plus I could pull tubes to get it down to 50w for more power section breakup, and it can be a decent backup amp.

Hmm interesting in that so many are saying this about BOOGIES!

Re: Anybody else have an amp they have a LOVE/ HATE relationship with?

The Red Channel of my Bogner Ecstasy 101b. I wanted METAL and it was a rock amp. Sometimes it just sounded too dry to me.

The BLUE channel, however, had no such issues.

H&K Tubemeister 18 30th Anniversary. I love the gain channel; it's definitely got a voice of its own instead of trying to be a Marshall or whatever, and the clean channel is fine for what I do. The three-band EQ is so weird, though. I think the treble is centered really high, enough to make it a lot less useful than treble knobs on amps usually are. With three different speakers I can't dial it in to sound really good with a lot of my dirt pedals, including the Carl Martin PlexiTone. (My Line 6 Spider IV 15 actually sounds better with that one.) I'm working on trying to buy the amp I used to demo the PlexiTone.

Re: Anybody else have an amp they have a LOVE/ HATE relationship with?

I've had this happen, too.

My old SUNN Solos II sounded great with single coils, but really grainy and edgy with certain humbuckers. My JCM 800 kicked butt when run above 5, and sounded thin and wimpy below that. I've had a couple of BF Fender heads, but I always missed reverb.

I've always said that the Mesa's had the tone and features I needed. I really found the tones I wanted in my first Mark III head and 412. I went through several amps, but when I found it, it was such a great feeling of joy.

I've had some frustration in learning how to cope with the different response of the EL-84 amps, but that was a minor thing and I quickly realized how good they sound. And the Mark V just has so many great tones, it's been hard to narrow it down to just a few. Talk about a first world problem, lol.

Most of the Mesa amps are not good for those with a need for instant gratification. They're not really plug and play; they take some dedication and commitment to find the best tones. And it can actually be harder with the Caliber Series amps. But I think it was worth the time and effort to find my sound with the Mesa amps I have.

When an amp sounds good one day and blah the next, it could be a sign of a weak tube in the amp. Another issue could be that the voltage coming out of the wall socket is not as steady as it could be, and that can be easily checked. I find that they do like to be played with some volume, but I think Mesas tend to sound better at low volume than many other amps.

I think sometimes it's just a matter of barometric pressure affecting our ears. And sometimes it's just a matter of having faith...in my gear, my talent, and my gear. Faith. I swear, sometimes the less I worry about tone the better I actually sound.

Re: Anybody else have an amp they have a LOVE/ HATE relationship with?

Never owned an amp I didn't like, but maybe in my teething years had a few amps I wasn't experienced enough to get the most out of and then would have that love/hate thing going on. My Dean Markley 60 watt combo was like that. Trying to turn a rock amp into a high gain metal beast back in the 80's. Didn't work all the time. If I had that amp now, I would be thrilled though. I was too stupid to get the most out of it back then.

I wouldn't call it love/hate with my ValveKing II mini head. but more tone ADHD so luckily have a couple preamp pedals I can choose from to plug into fx return to get that love back. It's only on the dirt channel too. It's a love/love on the clean channel.

Re: Anybody else have an amp they have a LOVE/ HATE relationship with?

Mine was a Fender Hot Rod Deville...loved the clean tones but the thing was WAY too loud for any of my uses. Not a fault of the amp, was just bummed that I couldn't use it

Re: Anybody else have an amp they have a LOVE/ HATE relationship with?

All of them.

Even my beloved 2204/2104 and 1987X gave me fits some days.

The issue I have with the H&K is that I simply outgrew the amp. When I bought it back in 2006 I played with quite a bit more gain than I use these days, so the saturation wasn't a problem. I need to sell it to someone looking for a simple clean / dirty metal amp and move on.
