Anybody Else Here A Big Fan Of Stratocasters With Bound Bodies?

Re: Anybody Else Here A Big Fan Of Stratocasters With Bound Bodies?

How do you go about binding a contour? Is there a special jig or is it done free hand?

Re: Anybody Else Here A Big Fan Of Stratocasters With Bound Bodies?

You can use a floating router, it has a donut shaped part around the cutting surface that rides on the body. This keeps that cutting surface the same depth from the top, and the jig is always horizontal so it cuts vertically all the time.

I like the PRS style faux binding effect of undyed wood but only on a Telecaster. My local Fender dealership has a Select model that calls to me. Flamed and birdseye. ;)

Re: Anybody Else Here A Big Fan Of Stratocasters With Bound Bodies?

I think I prefer them without the binding. With it they can look cool, but at the same time they lose a bit of their Strat qualities visually.

I like bound anything.

I would play the wangcaster if you put ivory binding on it

Re: Anybody Else Here A Big Fan Of Stratocasters With Bound Bodies?

Faux Binding on the only one I have currently; but YES! I've had a couple of Teles that were bound front and back and loved 'em.

Thanks! I picked this up off CL from a gentleman that had to be 70 years old. He had a local guitar builder assemble it for him; EMGs, Floyd, Kill Switch, D-Tuna, etc. He had it strung lefty and was playing it upside down Hendrix Style.

Had a Gold Gotoh Floyd w/D-Tuna, Gold Pickup Rings and Gold Knobs as well. I sold the Gotoh, D-Tuna and Mounting Rings and installed a Vintage '86 OFR w/Screw In Arm/42mm Big Brass Block and some Black Metal HB Mounting Rings/Knobs and that did it for me.

I am guessing manufacturers use a CNC router. I don't like the obvious break line you see when looking at the forearm contour through a high gloss finish.

One Strat(ish) guitar body that I wish I would finish was cut from a Alder blank and my contour is completely smooth and rounded without a distinct line and it looks great. The body isn't as thin at that point as a regular Strat so binding would still look good.

I have never thought about Strats with binding and I think they look beautiful. I need to learn how to install it.

Ah yes I've seen these kinds of jigs but I always thought they were fixed? I take it they move up and down according to where the donut makes contact? Seems simple enough to make one then.
Thanks

I'm thinking an alder, rear routed (no pickguard), arctic white Strat with black binding, Floyd Rose, maple neck and fretboard, five way switch, one white volume (where the middle tone control is), and white Livewire Classic II's for Strat would be a great sounding and looking guitar. Hmmm....time to get on Warmoth's site....lol

Sounds like a bit too much gold in that previous incarnation. I dig the black hardware on the body and gold on the headstock look though, particularly because that neck is so dark. What wood is that?

They move up and down yes.......1 made this with 2 drawer sliders. As you can see it is about to cut the binding channel on a Les Paul I'm making. The same floating principle is really needed in the horn, where the nature of the carve means you can't easily cut the channel any other way (for the home builder obviously).

I'm not a fan of Gold Hardware particularly but didn't have the black hardware to replace it on the neck; fortunately, I did have the parts laying around to replace the body hardware for which I didn't care. Sperzel Locking Tuners and an OFR Nut/String Retainer so why change it? the Two Tone doesn't bother me. Neck is Wenge w/an Ebony Fretboard.

Re: Anybody Else Here A Big Fan Of Stratocasters With Bound Bodies?

Without a pickguard, probably. I like Tele's with binding much better.

Re: Anybody Else Here A Big Fan Of Stratocasters With Bound Bodies?

I like the look but I also love a forearm contour... I like the faux masked binding look on those... Not really the same but similar vibe...

Re: Anybody Else Here A Big Fan Of Stratocasters With Bound Bodies?

To me binding on a Strat is like an elevator on an out house...what's the point. Fenders are SUPPOSED to be simple.
