Anybody have any experience with Cowtown Guitars (in Las Vegas)?

Re: Anybody have any experience with Cowtown Guitars (in Las Vegas)?

Hey Chris, I live in Vegas. Been to Cow town, it's a small store but everyone seems very friendly. Are you looking at that 59 Tele he has hanging on the wall? Yes, they have some very vintage stuff. Probably do ok buying from him.

Awwww, more Ed Roman flames. I've bought two guitars from Ed's place. Great deals on both. Yup he has some odd policies but so what. He does carry $129.00 guitars too, not just the boutique stuff. So far I can say that Ed's staff has treated me pretty good.

Bingo! :beerchug: I guess you picked up on the hints I was dropping about it being *different* :D

Yep, a '01 Fender Tele-sonic :D. I got it for $1000 shipped 2-day with a new SKB hardshell case and lock :)

I've been looking at Gretsch guitars, but I didn't like the thinner necks on them. I also wasn't very impressed with the quality control on many of them, so I didn't end up going that route.

I went to the Durham Fair (it's a CT fair that goes on in the fall) and saw the Gin Blossoms and one of the guitarists rocked with a Gretsch Roundabout. I really loved the tone from those crazy pickups, so I figured I needed something along those lines to add to my collection.

I've always been interested by this odd Fender. It's beyond a conventional tele, down to the chambered mahogany body, DeArmond 2k pickups and Wilkinson bridge. Best of all, the neck is wider than most typical production guitars and the beefiness is inbetween a Gibson '50s roundback and '60s slim taper, so it should fit my hands perfectly (the owner of Cowtown Guitars, Mark, also has big hands and needs a bigger neck and approved of it). To finish off the weirdness, it has a short scale.... yes, you heard right... a Fender with a Gibson like scale :saeek:

I can't recall anybody that actually owns or plays one, so that drew me in all the more ;). Worse of all, this one has been discontinued for a few years, so its been more and more difficult finding one, nevermind in flawless condition (like the one I just committed to buying).

Can you tell I'm excited? :D This will be the last guitar I get for a loooong time, so I need to make my Gibby, Warmoth and this Fender last.

Thanks for the positive feedback about Cowtown :beerchug:

I'm glad to hear you've had successful transactions with Ed Roman, but there are far too many negative stories than to warrant any real interest in dealing with the guy. He's pulled too many sketchy and downright wrong things to people than for me to take a chance with my money with him :smack:

I have to admit I called once and the staff seemed nice and informative, but Ed himself sounds like the guy that is sweet as pie when you're ordering and then will take advantage of you once he has a chance at your credit. If you run a search on this forum, you'll see some less than stellar reviews. As far as his opinions, I find most of them humorous and some I'll even agree with.

"Legitimate" or not, have you ever read his kooky diatribes on his page?

If you haven't- don't.
+1 like this

so this particular rant begins like this

In the United States of America we are supposedly guaranteed certain inalienable rights. Simple things like freedom of speech and freedom of expression, religion, opinions etc.

There are however many people who obviously disrespect this simple right. These people tend to love to be anonymous. The Internet is a perfect hiding place for these people to anonymously slink around. It's very easy to fake a user ID name or get a hotmail address and pretend to be someone who you really are not.

Off the net these people might fall into the same crowd as abortion clinic radicals, religious zealots and who knows, might even wear white hoods so you can't tell who they are either.

There is nothing I nor anyone else can do about this problem. It is basically an inbred problem with our brainwashed lemming culture.

For Example:

Sports fans from New York will get into a fist fight with sports fans from Boston over a game. I personally feel that is stupidness at the highest of all levels.

Just as a fiercely loyal Harley Davidson rider would downgrade a person for riding a Kawasaki. I myself used to be one of those people "then I grew up". I admit sometimes there is still a trace of it in me. I am not proud of it, I think it makes me a lesser person for ever denigrating someone for the type of motorcycle he rides.

It doesn't stop there, What about Organized Crime OOPS I mean Religion? More people have been needlessly murdered over Organized Religion than any other reason ever in the history of the world. I personally have had some excellent dealings with people of all races and religions, I think in 28 years my only bad experiences have been with several bible thumping totally dishonest wannabe Christians. In each case these were ex druggie types who simply found another crutch.

You almost only ever see the bad stuff. Do you brag on the guitar stores you use every time you buy gear, or do you just wait until have a bad experience? Most people do the latter.

Good call! That is so true in so many areas of life. My daughter is a RN at the local hospital - very vew people come out of the hospital talking about the great time they had in there :gurmpy: Makes it really hard on the people trying to provide good service to always be slammed.

Honestly, I've been looking at a guitar at Ed Roman's that is also at Musicians Friend. I would rather buy it at Ed Romans simply because I could at least talk to someone that knows something.
