anybody here have the Epiphone 58 Korina Explorer?

Snoogles

Cranky-dologist
i have an opportunity to pick one up for $300, with multiple upgrades:

- JB/59
- gotoh bridge/tail piece
- bournes pots
- schaller strap locks (i already have the strap)
- hard shell case

i'm wondering what the neck profile is like. Baseball bat? much MUCH thicker than the ESP thin-U?

Do it!
Yeah,it's got a big-ass neck,but more comfy than you'd think!
Black or Natural?

Re: anybody here have the Epiphone 58 Korina Explorer?

I just got one. Do it.

It's bigger than a thin ESP, but it isn't a baseball bat.

Great guitar, great upgrades, great price.

Do it.

Re: anybody here have the Epiphone 58 Korina Explorer?

Get it! That's a great deal at $300, especially with those upgrades. I had one for a while and sold it to a buddy of mine, so I still get to play it on occasion. I love the neck on it. Thicker than a shred stick but very comfortable.

Here's another "DO IT!".

I love the neck of mine, and I'm curious about the JB in it. I read horror stories about mahogany+JB but I wonder if the extra mass of wood over an LP would tame it some.

Plus, now you'll have to post pics. :-)

does it make any difference if its a korean epi, or a chinese epi?

Re: anybody here have the Epiphone 58 Korina Explorer?

I'm pretty sure all of the 58 Korina Explorers were Korean made. At least mine is.

Re: anybody here have the Epiphone 58 Korina Explorer?

Mine is Korean too. My sole complaint about the 58 Korina is that it's neck heavy on the strap. Otherwise it's great! I have thrown on a set of Sperzel style locking tuners, Tusq nut, Dragonfire Gold Screamer pickup set, and a Gibby TP-6 tail piece.

**edit** Also added black bell knobs

I'll echo the neck heavy comment. I just bought a 3" wide leather strap. No problems after that.

Will have to get one. Way better than duct taping a lead bar on the rear.

Re: anybody here have the Epiphone 58 Korina Explorer?

With white pickguard? I put a black pickguard and jack plate on mine, and made it like a LP Custom: black with gold hardware.

white pick guard, gold hardware/pickup covers.
if i get it, and its a keeper, i might swap out the gold for chrome. gold always looks so gaudy to me.
i may even try out one of those new-fangled "no-route" floyd rose tremolos on it. that's a BIG maybe

Hit that b!tch like she spilled your beer, didn't vacuum the ashes out of the carpet in the trailer, and then forgot to bring you your sammich!!!!!!!!!

Re: anybody here have the Epiphone 58 Korina Explorer?

is there a way to tell from the serial number where (china/korea/???) and when it was made?
where might the serial number be located?

and how do explorers play while seated?
