Re: anybody use a leslie in their rig?
Did Malmsteen or Lynch ever used one ?
No, but Jan Akkerman did.
Here's my favorite Leslie, the Model 950.
Four twelves, each with it own Vibratone-style foam rotor, with groovy whirling dayglo disks and built-in blacklights. Four independent 50-watt SS amps. 375 pounds. I might have seen one of these in a music store back in the early 70's, but I'm not sure. If I ever see one again, I'm buying it, no question.
Hmmm... if I can snag three more foam rotor units on eBay, I could build my own....:scratchch
One final thought: another fantastic use of a Leslie for guitar was by Mike Alsup on the first Three Dog Night (
no, really!) album, 'Naturally'. His main distortion sound was (I believe) a Fender Blender fuzzbox into a solid-state Leslie. Sounded like a million angry bees in a blender, but in a
good way.
That's a great album, BTW. The four players were studio ringers, and they really played their asses off on that 1st LP. Commercialism took over soon after.
