anybody use a leslie in their rig?

Re: anybody use a leslie in their rig?

Did Malmsteen or Lynch ever used one ?
No, but Jan Akkerman did.

Here's my favorite Leslie, the Model 950.

Four twelves, each with it own Vibratone-style foam rotor, with groovy whirling dayglo disks and built-in blacklights. Four independent 50-watt SS amps. 375 pounds. I might have seen one of these in a music store back in the early 70's, but I'm not sure. If I ever see one again, I'm buying it, no question.

Hmmm... if I can snag three more foam rotor units on eBay, I could build my own....:scratchch

One final thought: another fantastic use of a Leslie for guitar was by Mike Alsup on the first Three Dog Night (no, really!) album, 'Naturally'. His main distortion sound was (I believe) a Fender Blender fuzzbox into a solid-state Leslie. Sounded like a million angry bees in a blender, but in a good way.

That's a great album, BTW. The four players were studio ringers, and they really played their asses off on that 1st LP. Commercialism took over soon after.

I've always wondered what gave his tone that churning sound to it. I always thought it was a Univibe or something. Now I want a Leslie/Vibratone even more.

There's two songs I completely associate with the Leslie. The "bridge" section from Cream's "Badge" and the oldie but goodie called "A Plain Shame." (What does he say at the beginning of that? Make me go dig out my copy of that one...)

He says, "This is an oldie but goodie. It's called, 'It's a Plain... Shame." (Cheering).

Another time you can really hear the Leslies on FCA is the big arena-rock ending of Do You Feel... They have the Leslies on both guitar and organ cranked up to high speed and the sound is just coming from all directions.

Also during (I'll Give You) Money, when Frampton is playing the longer chords in the part where he's singing, "I'll give you money...I'll give you loving," you can hear the Leslie shaping the sound of the chords.

Also the intro and ending parts of Little Wing by Hendrix are a pretty good example of that Leslie sound.
