Anyone do the Spin-A-Split mod?

I've got an Air Norton/Tonezone combo ready to go into a chambered LP. It's already on the bright side so I think these pickups should be OK.

Anyway, I'm thinking of doing the spin-a-split for each one. I've never done this mod before. The schematic looks pretty easy to implement. Just looking for real world experience from those who have done it. Any special values for the pots used? Audio or linear taper? Did you like it?

Thanks :beerchug:

Thanks, hermetico. My plan is to convert the wiring to a master vol, master tone, then have a split pot for each pickup. I don't have any 100k long shaft pots tho. I do have a bunch of Gibson 300k long shafts so I'll probably use those for the splits.

It should be possible to use a resistor to get them down to 100k, but I suspect this will make the taper issue worse, not better.
Might be worth testing, tho.

Thanks, MM. I thought about that right after posting. I think I'll try the 300k first to see how I like it. If that works fine, poof! I'm done :D

Re: Anyone do the Spin-A-Split mod?

It is useful for getting a little more brightness and edge for solo's.

Re: Anyone do the Spin-A-Split mod?

I use this mod in my Strat w/t a CC. I use the stock unused 250k tone knob. The CC is a great PuP for searing solos w/t Lots of Gain, But Clean ,or w/t just a tad of O.D. It sounds to tight/Compressed. That's where to spin-o-Split mod comes into play. As you roll a knob back, You can hear it start to open up! When you find the sweet spot, It sounds more like a Hot P.A.F. Then ya roll the knob all the way, And ya got a single coil.:D

I had it in a Strat with a JB. It was kind of cool, but I eventually changed it to something else (can't remember exactly why). I don't think I found the in-between tones to be all that useful TBH.

Re: Anyone do the Spin-A-Split mod?

Well, I'm putting this into a LP so the in-between tones I'm not so worried about :)

kmc, that sounds exactly like the effect I'm hoping to get! Sounds promising!

I've only got the Gibson 300k long-shafts in linear. I think that's all they come in. I'll try them out. It's probably just a matter of which end of the rotation you get the most effect from.

Re: Anyone do the Spin-A-Split mod?

I had an SG with a master tone, master volume and spin-a-split for each pickup. I really liked it and I'm actually about to go back to that right now. For me, the tones that were most useful besides full HB and full split were at around 8 and 2, just a little bit of humbucking or 1 coil just a little weaker than the other.

Re: Anyone do the Spin-A-Split mod?

Which type pots did you use for the split pots, Jacob? Sounds like we're on the same tone path :D

Re: Anyone do the Spin-A-Split mod?

The 500k audio ones that were already in there. I didn't think it was an issue at all, with any type of pot you just have to learn which positions give you which sound. For me that meant that the middle range was pretty much useless and all the action happened around the extremes.
